people retire early in the
year. They are coming to the
social security office to file
claims for benefits. The claims
can be completed much faster
when needed proofs are pre
sented at the time of filing,
he said. A telephone call to
the office before retirement
may save a great deal of time
by insuring that all evidence
will be produced promptly,
Jacobson added.
Generally, a claimant for
monthly benefits must estab
lish his age. This may be
done with a birth .'certificate
or some other record that is
old and reliable. Also, evi
dence of the claimant's earn
ings for. 1959 "is necessary.
A copy of.Fonri W-2, with
holding statement, lor 1959 is
acceptable if the income was
earned as an employee. The
self-employed should bring a
copy of their 1959 income tax
return, including Schedule C
or F which shows their self-
employment income, and the
cancelled check,' money order
stub, or -bank receipt which
shows they paid the tax.
"Bring your- proofs with
you," Jacobson stressed, "for
prompt payment of your first
social security check." The

Marine Officers to
Be at SOC Campus
U. S. Marine Corps aviation
and line officer programs will
be explained on the Southern
Oregon College campus, Ash
land, Feb. 11 and 12, by a
Marine officer selection team,
according to MSgt. Bill Ray

Interviews will be held by
Capts. R. C. Schulze and W.
O. Bonsall from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. in the Britt lounge Feb.
11 and 12.
Training for qualified fresh
men, sophomores and juniors
is conducted under the pla
toon leaders class, Sergeant
Rayner explained. This leads
to a commission and advanced
training as an aviation or field
officer when the bachelor's
degree has been earned.

The Trans World Airlines
plane, on a flight from Miami
to Los Angeles, had received
proper clearance and the land
ing appeared normal until the
mishap occurred, a TWA
spokesman said. The cause of
the crash was not immediate
ly determined. -
The wheels of the 100-ton,
$5 million airliner sank two
feet into mud when it came
to the end of the 6,000-foot
runway.

Karen E. - I want to tell
Lee our real opinion.
Dianne B. It may make us
appear to be jealous.
Karen E. - My friend Di
anne and I are having a big
dispute about a matter that
concerns another friend of
ours.
We are all girls of 19, quite
popular and have been close
friends for the past year. We
belong to the same church
group and have dated many
of the same fellows. Recently,
Lee started going out steady
with one of these boys and it
looks as though they may get
engaged soon.
Now it happens both Dianne
and I have gone out with Jim
and we both think he's awful.
He is no gentleman, tells off
color jokes and we think he's
kind of stupid too. We know
for a fact that Lee can do
better and I want to tell her
so. Dianne is against it.
Dianne B. - I spoke to my
mother about this and she is
definitely against doing any
thing like that. She says it
might look as though we are
jealous or something, about
Lee's being the first to get
engaged.
Of course, it's not at all
true about our being jealous.
Neither of us would have Jim,
but I certainly wouldn't want
Lee to think anything like
that.
I have promised my mother
that I wouldn't go to Lee and
say anything against Jim, but
I think it may be okay to say
what we think if she asks us.
Since they aren't engaged yet,
there would be no harm done.
We have all often discussed
different fellows together. But
Lee has never said anything
about Jim.
The Council: We are with
Dianne. Her mother gave her
the right advice, but she is
going off the track again in
her idea that it would be' all
right to say something anti
Jim if Lee asks for an opinion.
In the first place, we don't
think Lee will ask for an
opinion. These three girls have
behaved on a ' somewhat im
mature level by discussing
their dates with one another.
This is something . girls in
their early teens do as a sort
of warm-up to developing a
real acquaintanceship with the
boys. A young woman ready
for marriage limits personal
discussions about the boy's
character to her parents. The
fact that Lee hasn't talked
about Jim may be one sign
that she is growing up.
. In the second place, we
don't think that Karen and
Dianne have any right to set
themselves up as judges of
this young man's personality.
It is entirely possible that he
behaved in one way with them
and quite another with their
friend. He may have matured
since their contacts with him,
or Lee may have brought out
something better in him.
In the third place, Karen
and Dianne may easily rue the
day they ever said anything
unpleasant against Jim. It is
entirely possible that Lee will
marry him no matter what
they say. Then they will have
lost a friend in the silliest and
most embarrassing way.
Last but not least, Karen
and Dianne should be aware
that this is a situation in
which it is almost impossible
for them to be entirely ob
jective. We all know that
jealousy is a very ugly word
and we don't like to be caught
with such a feeling. Most of
us have felt its twinges, but
few have admitted it. As
young women whose future is
still uncertain, Karen and
Dianne could easily experi
ence such a feeling in relation
to a friend who is on the brink
of finding personal happiness.
Of course, they also wish their
friend the best, but their judg
ment of what is best can so
easily be colored by unworthy
feelings.
We suggest that these girls
try to see something nice
about Jim and that they say
it if a discussion ever arises -or
if Lee announced her en

Meyer Receives
Three-Year Contract

er, superintendent of school
district 6C, recently signed a
three-year contract, the board
has announced.
The district includes Cen
tral Point, Gold Hill and
Sams Valley.
Meyer became superinten
dent of the district a year ago,
when H. P. Jewett resigned
after serving the district more
than 30 years.
Dawkins Has TWX
Service Installed
William Dawkins and Asso
ciates, public relations firm,
last week became the first or
ganization of its kind in the
Pacific Northwest to have Pa
cific Telephone's TWX serv
ice. The installation " permits
fast written communication
between the firm's offices in
Portland and Medford as well
as with its clients and news
media, according to Ron
Schmidt, Portland manager
for Dawkins and Associates.
It now costs $2.07 to buy
what a dollar bought in 1940.
Grants Pass Woman
Being Held in Jail
Willa Dean Vollmert,
Grants Pass, is being held in
the county jail on charges of
contributing to the delin
quency of a minor.
She is charged with induc
ing a 17-year-old Gold Hill
girl to run away from her
home last week end.
The girl did not return
home from a basketball game
at Crater High school in Cen
tral Point last Saturday. She
was apprehended by Jo
sephine county and JacksOn
county sheriffs deputies at
Mrs. Vollmert's home near
Grants Pass Wednesday.
The teenager was lodged in
the Jackson county juvenile
detention home. Mrs. Voll
mert was arrested at the same
time.
Cottage Grove Man
Rescues Children
Cottage Grove -(DPD Alton
Garrett was hospitalized with
severe burns Friday after res
cuing seven children from a
burning home while his wife
was in Texas to attend the
funeral of her slain brother.
Garrett suffered first and
second degree burns about the
hands and face as he helped
the children to safety when
fire destroyed his frame home
at nearby Culp Creek.
He is a brother-in-law of
Roy Lee Bell, 32, who was
shot to death last week in a
local tavern. The Bell family
had recently moved here from
Texas and Garrett's wife went
to Texas for her brother's fu
neral. The children included four
youngsters of Mr. and Mrs.
Garrett and three of Mr. and
Mrs. Bell.
