The new circle of Squires,
the 13th in the state of Ore
gon, was instituted last Sun
day in ceremonies conducted
supplement the teachings of
church, home and school.
Their motto is "Esto Dignus
(be worthy)."

is Rogue River council
Knights of Columbus of Med
ford. The council also spon
sors Boy Scout Troop 1 and
Cub Scout den 1. Members
of both groups, as well as
Fourth Degree Knights of
Columbus, participated in sev
eral of .the institution day ac
tivities.

those honored last week at a
"Smarty party" given by
Mortar Board, senior wo
men's honorary group.
A grade point average of
3.0 or higher for 12 term
hours during their first term
on the campus is necessary in
order for a girl to be invited.

Open House
Announced
Rogue River-An open house
will' be held in the new Rogue
River grade school building
Wednesday, February 10, at
7:30 p.m. by. the Parent
Teacher association.
The rooms will be open for
inspection by the public and
teachers will be present. Re
freshments will be served in
the new cafeteria which was
first used by the school Feb
ruary 1.
The school board, architect,
contractor and district admin
istrators expect to make the
final -inspection and accept
ance of the new building

When It Comes to Valentines

romance of St. Valentine's
Day may reach an all-time
peak this year because, among
other things, it again isX.eap
Year.
An estimated half-million
women are expected to make
their pitch to men with Leap
Year cards on Feb. 14. But
research shows that mothers
will be three-to-one favorites
over sweethearts when- it
comes to recipients of valen
tines from men.
Single women need not
worry, however, because re
search also reveals that sweet
heart cards outnumber Leap
Year cards two-to-one.
The romantic angle between
femme and fellow on Valen
tine's Day dates back to the
Romans. But the idea of send
ing love and sentiment could
n't be limited for long to the
boy -and -girl phase. Valen
tine's Day now is a time for
expressing special regards as
well as romantic sentiment -
a day for every member of
the family. There Is a wide
variety of cards for everyone
from baby, school children,
and sweethearts to mothers,
dads and grandparents.
Nostalgia plays an impor
tant part in valentines this
year.
Pangs of remembrance may
be felt in the hearts of silver
haired sweethearts of yester
year as they view new heir
loom valentines (by Hall
mark). The valentines are re
productions of the ornate
missives of the Victorian era.
Victorian era cards have
cupids, coloring, embossing
and cutouts similar to the
missives popular in the 1890's.
Accompanying these valen
tines are ornate table center
pieces, party invitations, tal
lies, napkins, trays and nut
with the serious and
sentimental valentines this
year are the "contemporary"
cards with their sometimes
sharp humor. " 1

lumbus has attempted to do
this by sponsoring and coun
selling the Columbian Squires
program throughout the Unit
ed States since 1925. Catholic
boys from 13 to 18 years of
age are eligible for member
ship in the organization.
