New Rules for
Road Use Noted
New regulations will re
lieve private companies from
paying road use fees on roads
they build across bureau of
land management's western
Oregon forest lands, the de
partment of interior has an
nounced. Under the old rules, if a
private operator built . a log
ging road across O and C
lands to reach and haul out
timber he owned and he re
ceived a short-term permit
from the government, the
road became government
property when the permit ex
pired. Unless the government were
maintaining the road, the
operator would not pay any
fee while his permit was in
effect, BLM Director Edward
Woozley explained.
Under the new rules, if the
game operator again wanted
to use that same road, after
his permit expired, he would
not be required to pay a road
lee, Woozley said.
He would, however, con
tinue to pay his proportionate
share of the maintenance
costs of the road, along with
his share of any improve
ments added to the road by
the government since the
operator first built and used
It.
Under the old . rules, the
operator had to pay a road
use fee based on his fair share
of the total road construction
mad maintenance costs. Act

Blocking Unander
Portland (BPD Sen. Rich
ard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.)
said Triday he hoped Sen.
Ernest Gruening (D-Alaska)
would not attempt to block
the appointment of ex-Oregon
State Treasurer Sig Unander
to the Federal Maritime
Iroard.
Gruening Thursday charged
that Unander was not a "fit
member" to sit on the Board,
saying the Oregonian "pre
judged" a freight rate case
involving Alaska. He made
the ' accusation at a Senate
Commerce committee hearing
on Unander's nomination.
Neuberger, recuperating at
borne after two bouts with
the flu, wired Gruening that :
he fully sympathized "with
your indignation over con
stantly increasing freight
rates to Alaska."
"However," Neuberger add
ed, "It is my earnest hope that
you will not oppose Senate
confirmation . . . because of
this long-standing practice of
the Board which precedes by
many decades Mr. Unander's
appointment."
Bristol Silica
Plant to Be Sold
Rogue River The present
Bristol Silica plant at Rogue
River will be sold with its
equipment Feb. 23 by the Ore
gon State Highway commis
sion, it was announced.
To be sold are crushers,
roller mills, shakers, separa
tors, vibrating screens, dust
collectors, tumbler dryer, wa
ter pump, metal frame shop
building, office building and
other miscellaneous items.
The plant is being rebuilt
about a mile west of Rock
Point bridge where an S curve
crosses the Southern Pacific
tracks.
The commission, which is
selling the plant equipment
before razing the building,
will open the building for in
spection at 8 a.m. Feb. 23 be
fore the sale starting at 1 pjn.

Starts Business
A small family business for
making wire chicken and rab
bit cages has been established
up Thompson creek on the
Applegate, it was reported.
Lyle, Neil and Don Stoner,
a father and his two sons have
filed the assumed business
name Stoner and Sons, Fab
ricators in the county clerk's

The family;" said it is the
only business Vol its type in
southern Oregon. A number
of orders have been received
from as far away as Klamath

Woman Backed
For Water Board
Salem - (WD - Mrs. W. D.
Hagenstein, Portland, was
nominated Saturday by Gov.
Mark Hatfield as a member of
the Oregon Water Resources
board. She is a past president
of the Portland League of
Women Voters.
Confirmation of her ap
pointment must be made by a
state senate interim commit
tee. She is a Republican.
She would be the first
woman to serve on the board
since its establishment sev
eral years ago.
Her appointment is to suc
ceed Ben Little, Corvallis,
who resigned.
Other board members are
LaSelle Coles of Prineville;
Karl Onthank, Eugene; John
Davis, Stayton; George Corey,
Pendleton; Robert Root, Med
ford and Gen. Louis Foote,
Forest Grove.

Get Federal Funds
Washington-OJPD-The Urban
Renewal administration grant
ed $38,885 in federal money
Friday to the Oregon State
Board of Higher Education
for development of compre
hensive plans for growth and
development of nine Oregon
communities.
Sen. Richard Neubereer's
office here said the money is
earmarked for the communi
ties of Astoria. aCnby. Dallas.
Empire, Klamath Falls, North
Bend, The Dalles, Pendleton
and Reedsport.
The federal grant will be
matched by equal state and
local funds.
4-H Club News
Central Point Cudchewers
The Central Point Cud
chewers 4-H club held a meet
ing at . the home of Carol
Foote on Scenic ave. recently.
An achievement program
for 4-H'ers was discussed.
Also, Carol Foote gave a re
port on her Cheviot sheep,
and the club watched Clem
Ault clipped their feet.
Club members have not yet
decided where to hold the
next meeting. Refreshments
were served by Mrs. Bailey
and Mrs. Foote.
