Threatens Homes
Pahoa, Hawaii -IUPD- A 500
foot wide wal lof lava pushed
slowly through the Kapoho
Beach area today, threatening
to destroy the remaining
40 homes in the $1 million
tract.
The smoking stream of mol
ten rock already has destroyed
10 houses in the 80-acre proj
ect and a total of 64 since the
original eruption near Kapoho
Jan. 13.
The Coast Guard lighthouse
at Kumukahi Point and the
Nakamura store in Kapoho
Village still were intact as
lava stopped within a few feet
of the buildings.
In Honolulu. 200 miles to
the northwest, the usually
bright blue skies were blotted
out by volcanic "smog."

An article on Tucker Sno
Cats, which are made in Med
ford, appears in this month's
issue of the Pacific Telephone
Northwest magazine.
Sno-Cats, which are used on
every continent in the world
except Africa and are used ex
tensively in the Antarctic, the
article notes, were invented
by Emmitt Tucker Sr., in 1920
and are made in his plant at
2872 South Pacific highway,
Medford.
The magazine points out
that Sir Vivian Fuchs used a
Sno-Cat on his successful
trans-Antarctic expedition in
1958 and that 13 Sno-Cats will
be on hand during the winter
Olympic games at Squaw Val
ley. Eisenhowers Plan

The First Lady will drive

of late by good news about
their investment in bank
shares, says Goodbody & Co.
"Business has been good
for the banks and earnings
from operations have reached
new highs in many cases," the
firm notes.
"The outlook for 1960 is
for continued prosperity for
the commercial banks. Con
tinued demand for money has
forced interest rates higher
and higher as loanable funds
have grown scarcer and
scarcer."
Purcell & Co. says Penn
Fruit, one of the fastest grow
ing supermarket chains in the
East, is a "defensive" situa
tion with long-term promise.
The company expects to list
its common and convertible
preferred on the New York
Stock Exchange "at an early
date."
Bache & Co. believes the
market has not yet formed

move, nor has any selling

seems likely that a successful
test of last week's low point

Satellite Failure
Being Studied

-Scientists today studied
tracking data of the unsuc
cessful Discovered IX shot in
an attempt to learn why the
satellite failed to achieve a
polar orbit around the earth.
. Discoverer IX burned up
in the earth's atmosphere mo
ments after launching Thurs
day and fell harmlessly into
the Pacific. With it went an
electable capsule crammed
with instruments which scien
tists had hoped to recover.
Each of the- thousands of
parts making up the seven
story, two-stage rocket were
subjected to a minute exami
nation for a two-month period
prior to Thursday's shot. The
rocket had been pronounced
basically sound.

In a crucial ruling, the
judge in the Finch murder
trial refuses to admit into evi
dence Carol Tregoff's account
of -what happened the night of
the slaying. Among other
things she admitted, at that
time, bringing along to the
murder scene what the prose
cution calls a "do it yourself
murder kit," including a
knife, cartridges, rope and
drugs.
The point involved is that
she was not informed in ad
vance that what she said
could be used against her.
VyELL, it's an important
" point. It involves the
fifth of the ten original
amendments to the constitu
tion of the United States that
are generally known as the
Bill of Rights. This fifth
amendment reads:
"No person shall be held to
answer for a capital or other
infamous crime unless on pre
sentment of indictment of a
Grand Jury, except in cases
arising in the land or naval
forces, or in the militia, when
in actual service, in time of
war or public danger: nor
shall any person be subject
for the same offense to be
twice put in jeopardy of life
or limb; NOR SMALL BE
COMPELLED IN ANY CRI
MINAL CASE TO BE A WIT
NESS AGAINST HIMSELF,
nor be deprived of life, lib
erty or property, without due
process of Jaw; nor shall pri
vate property be taken for
public use without just com

we want ANY of them taken
away from us. Least of all do
we want to lose the right not
to be COMPELLED to testify
against ourselves.
None of us, I think, has
forgotten the period in the
history .of mankind when
cruel and heartless tyrants
were free to break men's
bodies on the wheel or tear
them apart on the rack in
order to COMPEL them to ad
mit by their own testimony
that they had done this or
that of which they stood ac
cused. CO-
U Let's all agree that the
Tregoff , girl must not be
COMPELLED to testify
against herself. That she must
not be FORCED to incrimi
nate herself. That would be
going back to the Middle
Ages.
But
Let's not forget that a cruel
and brutal and conscienceless
crime has been committed. It
is out duty to see to it that
whoever committed the crime
is convicted and punished.
So
Let's hope that all this fuss
over Miss Tregoff's account
of what happened on ihe
night of the murder is not per
mitted to so becloud the con
duct of the trial that the per
son guilty of the crime will
go free.
After all, it is a prime duty
of the STATE to see to it that
those guilty of crime shall be
convicted and punished.

should tell his mother off.
Glen R. - Janet should
make allowances.
Janet R. My -mother-in-law
is a widow with a large
fortune. She has been the
bane of my life ever since we
were married eight years ago.
Under the guise of being
generous, this woman actual
ly walks roughshod over
every member of the family.
Her other son, his wife and
her daughter kowtow to her,
hoping she'll come through
with some wonderful gifts.
She does give, it's true.
She has bought securities for
our children which should
help them with a college edu
cation. She has given me
jewelry, and last year made
the down payment on all new
appliances for our home. But
she is also nasty, sneering and
critical toward me. Nothing
is worth such treatment and
I want my husband to tell her
off.
Glen R. Mother does have
a way about her that gets
people's goats. She always
was that way, even when we
were little kids and she didn't
have that kind of money.
But I think her generosity
is sincere. It isn't just that
she wants to lord it over
everyone as Janet thinks. She
wants us all to be well off
and enjoy whatever benefits
she can give us.
I know Jan thinks I'm a
"Mamma's boy" because I
don't defend her when she is
being hurt by my mother. It
always seems so petty to me
after Jan tells me about it.
Mother just wouldn't under
stand if I complained to her.
She'd say she just spoke to
Jan in her ordinary way. I
figure Mom's getting old and
Jan should make allowances.
The Council: It's a sad fact
we tend to see our own weak
nesses and vices in others and
are blind to them in our
selves. Janet blames her mother-in-law
for standing on her ma
terial possessions to exact a
form of emotional payment
from her children. Yet Janet's
own desire for those posses
sions appear to be strong
enough to keep her in terror
of her mother-in-law. If Mrs.
R. were poor Janet would not
take her sneering and criti
cism. We don't think Janet should
take insults from her mother-in-law,
and we don't think
she should needle her hus
band to "tell off" his own
mother. It is very likely that
Janet has developed a highly
sensitive ego in relation to
her mother-in-law and gets
herself hurt when no slight
was intended. She should,
therefore, try to see each situ
ation rationally. It she feels
she has been treated badly
she should tell her mother-in-law
in a respectful manner
exactly what it is that has
hurt her.
Janet's own attitude is
really what is hurting her
most. When she cringes and
cowers because she respects
money as the one real power
she shows that she thinks she
is worth little or nothing in
herself. Unfortunately, her
mother-in-law seems to be the

161,000 worth of new military
construction during fiscal
1961.
The figure was substanti

authorization passed last year.

Police Departments to
Use Uniform Tickets
Police departments through-1 Chief of Police Charles
out Oregon will soon be using
a uniform traffic ticket simi
lar to the one the Medford de
partment has been using for
the last four years.
The Oregon supreme court
this week approved the uni
form ticket, recommended by
the state traffic court rules
committee.
It is scheduled to be adopt
ed by all police departments
by July 1, but many depart
ments will start using the
ticket sooner, an announce
ment stated.
