Gold Hill Council OKs 3 Ordinances

Gold Hill - Three ordi
nances, including one that will
control explosives within the
city limits of Gold Hill, were
approved by the city council
at its meeting Monday night.
' The new ordinances will be
posted for a period of 10 days
on the door at the city hall
on Fifth, ave. so that the pub
lie may read them in full.
Ordinance No. 309 provides
that Ash, Birch, Cedar, and
Fir sts. in the Water Park ad
dition of the city of Gold Hill
shall be abandoned, because
the present situation could be
detrimental to future develop
ment. Ordinance No. 310 provides
for the conveyance of certain
land in the Water Park addi
tion by warranty deed to Lois
L. Ramsey and Ernest E. Ram
gey and authorizes the record
er and mayor to sign the nec
essary pspers.
Granting of Permits
Ordinance No. 311 will con
trol the moving and storage
of explosives within the city
of Gold Hill. It will give the
council the privilege to grant
or deny required permits or
renewals for moving and stor
age of explosives according to
certain limits and terms as
necessary to protect the safety
of the people. Regular inspec
tions will be required. The
council may revoke a permit
in case of violation of the ordi
nance and enforce . certain
penalties as stated in the
ordinance. Transportation and
vehicles must be in compli
ance with federal and state
laws and fire zone regula
tions. Vehicles loaded with ex
plosives may travel only on
designated routes, operated
only by competent personel
and attended at all times. It
provides that parking and
stopping of vehicles will be
restricted. Extreme caution in
regard ' to refueling and re
pairing will be controlled and
the chief of police is author
ized to enforce the explosive
ordinance at all times as a
safeguard to life and property.
It also provides that all
ordinances which conflict with
No. 311 be repealed.
Kelly Appointed
Bernard Kelly was appoint
ed by the council to act as
city attorney for the remaind
er of Miss Noreen Kelly's
term.
Officials of the council re
port that no further progress
has been made on a resolution
calling for an election on the
proposed bond issue for a fil
tration plant for the city wa
ter supply.
Chief of Police Floyd Tay
lor presented problems pre
taining to law enforcement in
the city for consideration by
the council.
Mark B o y d e n, Medford,
spoke to the council in regard
to survey work that he is
doing for the city. He was in
structed by the city officials
Monday evening to investigate
particular problems that are
said to exist in the Deekem
amended addition of the city.
Big Applegate Flow.

Applegate Valley - Henry
Mapston, operator of the gov
ernment river gauge located
south of Copper, reported
Tuesday that the flow in Big
Applegate was 3.5 feet at the
peak of Monday's rain. Nor
mal flow for winter is 3.7
feet, he said.
The low flow for last sum
mer, which lasted into No
vember, was 1.17 feet, accord
ing to Mapston. The flow at
Salt Marsh, he added, was
1.23 inches Monday.
Washington (UPB Rep. Wal
ter Norblad (R-Ore.) said a
modern post office has been
authorized for Garibaldi, Ore.
EP Cracks Down On Violations
Eagle Point - The National
Building code is being rigidly
enforced here in order to
crack down on violations, ac
cording to Jake Brown, build
ing inspector.
Brown said there were a
number of violations last year
but that builders are now be
ing made to meet the code's
specifications. Building per
mits are free for any con
struction of S50 or less but a
permit must be obtained and
attached to the premises prior
to the start of any work, he
added.
Violation of the code is a
misdemeanor and is punish
able by a fine of between $10
and $100 or a term of not
more than six months in jail
or by both the fine and jail
term.
The ordinance has been in
force since Jan. 1 under
Brown's new term of office.

and Jackson County.

Treasure Trove here, is ex
changing its old books for new
ones periodically. Requests for
books not on hand may be
made without charge. "

an "idiot" or a "knothead."
Rather, it is something to be
proud of and several people
are quite proud of their
badges designating them as
such.
It all goes with square
dancing, and anyone driving
a hundred miles to a. square
dance receives his badge as a
"knothead." Barbara and
Cliff Jones are "knotheads,"
along with Jo and Fritz Of
fenbacher and Lance and
Stella Offenbacher because
' they drove to Roseburg to a
dance.
Nobody has gained an
"idiot's" pin as yet, for mas
tering this feat requires cour
age. A group must go to a
caller's home about 4 a.m.,
awaken him, have a dance at
his house, and have breakfast
there.
However, several people
have become "hoot owls,"
which requires dancing all
night, having breakfast, then
''squaring up" again before
going home. Among the local
"hoot-owls" are Fred and
Ethel West, Leon and Lola Of
fenbacher, Mr. and Mrs. Clay
Brion, Mr. and Mrs. "Brew"
Brewster, and Henrietta Le

Thursday on the need for an
override tax in this district
to enable the school to oper
ate with three or four teach
ers. Average daily attendance is
64, Grey said, a figure far
short of that required for four
teachers.
Principal Aristeo Perez and
Doug Whitaker, chairman of
the school board, presented
the proposed 1960-61 budget,
followed by a question and
answer session to help clarify
the request for an override
tax.
The PTA also passed an ex
ecutive board recommenda
tion to donate $5 to the Sci
ence Fair to be held next
month in Yreka.
It was announced that a
card party will be held at the
center building Feb. 12.
Mining Council to
Meet in Jacksonville

elect new officers at its an
nual dinner Thursday even
ing in the Jacksonville Com
munity building.
The dinner will start at
6:30. The election and bus
iness meeting, starting at
7:30, will be followed later
in the evening by a white ele
phant auction and entertain
