TURNED OVER TO POLICE Mrs. Gladys Norman, 47, tries
to cover her blackened eye after a fight with her 15-year-old
son, who turned her in to police as an alleged narcotics user,
police reported. Officers said the boy, John Norman, called
them and said, "I want my, mother arrested because she's

55,380 Acres Burned In '59 Fire Season
Salem The total acreage
burned over during 1959 on
all forest lands within Oregon
coming under the jurisdiction

ice totaled 55,380 acres, ac

number of fires was far less.
The 1958 figures show 19,
764 acres burned and a total
of 2,680 fires.
The difference in the num
ber of fires Wiesendanger said,
was due largely to an exces
sive number of lightning fires
in 1958 when the total was
1,573 compared to 439 last
season.
Man caused fires dropped
from 1,107 in 1958 to 926 last
year.
Woman Injured in One
Of Four Accidents
A woman suffered neck in
juries in a three-car collision
in Medford Monday after
noon, according to city police.
Three other minor traffic
accidents were also reported
to police.
The injured woman, Theo
Sarah Rebecca Jones, 41, Gold
Hill, suffered a sprained neck
Marines Ordered
Home in Disgrace
As Smugglers
London - (LTD - Seven of the
U.S. Marines who guard the
embassy here are being sent
home in disgrace as cigarette
and whiskey smugglers.
Four sergeants and three
corporals were reduced to
private by a Navy court mar
tial, fined and ordered back
to the United. States.
A British newspaper said
the seven men would be flown
back to the U.S., but the re
port could not be confirmed
immediately. U.S. authorities
have refused so far to iden
tify the erring guards.
Based on Testimony
The case against he Ma
rines was based on testimony
by a Dutch aircraft . worker,
husband of a former embassy
telephone operator, who said
the Marines sold him tax-free
cigarettes and whiskey.
The worker, Lambertus Van
Veggel, had eight bottles of
untaxed whiskey and more
than 35 cartons of cigarettes
in his car when he was
caught. He told police he had
more than 370 cartons of un
taxed cigarettes at home.
Veggel was fined $700 for
illegal possession of the un
taxed goods. His 82,750 auto
mobile was confiscated be
cause he had not paid cus
toms on it.
Birmingham. Ala.-flJPD-Po-lice-
today sought the ill-mannered
burglars who loosened
all the light fuses in Mrs.
Charles T. Dyer's home before
making off with meat, eggs
and canned goods. Mrs. Dyer
sleeps under an electric blanket.

after the car in which she was
a passenger was hit from be
hind by one car and knocked
forward into another vehicle
about 12:40 p.m. on Court st.,
between Manzanita and Ed
wards sts., according to police
reports.
Police said the three cars
were proceeding in the same
direction when the first car
operated by Gertrude Adeline
Shontz, Gold Hill, came to an
unexpected stop, followed by
the second vehicle operated
by Wilford James Jones, Gold
Hill, which also stopped in
time.
Fails to Slop
However, the third car,
operated .by Anna Dora
Wright, 37, of 1813 North
Riverside ave., did not stop
in time, hit the Jones vehicle
from the rear and knocked it
into' the Shontz car, police
said.

Wright was cited by city po- i
lice for following too close.
Police cited Sharon Jean
Lyon, 20. of 3520 Bursell rd.,
Central Point, for disobeying
a red light after the car she
was operating crashed into a
vehicle operated by Frank
Dean Price, 39, of 1028 Mt.
Pitt ave., at the intersection
of Court and Manzanita sts.
at 8:47 a.m.
Earl Merritt Root Jr., 23,
of 1832 North Riverside ave.,
was cited by city police Mon
day for failure to yield the
right of way to a vehicle on
the right after the van truik
he was operating was in
volved in a collision with a
car operated by Mildred
Frances Perkins, 39, of 1340
Murray st., at the intersection
of Ninth and Holly sts. at
11:23 a.ru.
Another accident occurred
about 7:10 p.m. when a car
operated by Samuel Taylor
Richardson, 41, of 1609 Strat
ford Way, hit the rear of a
vehicle operated by Alfred
Arnold Johnson, 20, of 1832
North Riverside ave., which
had stopped for a red light
at the intersection of Sixth st.
and Central ave.
Holman's Estate
Figured at $40,000
Portland-(UPD-An estate of
approximately 540,000 was
left by Rufus C. Holman,
former U.S. sentor who died
last November, according to a
petition on file in Probate
Court here.
