City Firemen Douse
Three Fires Here
Medford firemen were sur
prised at the velocity of a
grass fire Saturday afternoon
which leaped a ditch and
burned three acres of grass
on Oakmont lane, just off
Coalmine rd.
The fire apparently started
ale rig the roadway and ex
tended to a pasture owned by
W. J. Wickman, they said.
Winds caused the fire to
spread rapidly before it was
extinguished.
Medford firemen were call
ed to two chimney flue fires
Friday, but neither did any
damage. One was at the home
of John C. Preston, 1956 Rob
erts rd. The other was at th
residence of Robert W. Clark,
2395 Sunset court, Medford.
Both flue fires were allowed
to burn out.
Boy Scouts
Dinner Planned
The annual blue and gold
dinner for Griffin Creek Cub
scouts will be held Tuesday,
Feb. 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the
Griffin Creek school cafe
teria. All Cub scouts and their
families in the vicinity are
invited.
Those attending snould take
a dish for the potluck dinner
and table service. Paper
plates, hot rolls and butter,
coffee and milk will be furnished.
Troop 121
The first Court of Honor
for Boy Scout Troop 121 was
held at the Deer Creek
Grange hall. Awards were
presented by Scoutleader Wil
liam O. Burch, assisted by
Assistant Scoutmaster Lex
Riggan Jr., and Jim Burch.
Merit badges were award
ed to Peter Hines and Mike
Riggan for home repair and
citizenship in the home, and
to Rickey Peltier for wood
carving.
Second class pins were
presented to Courtney Hyde,
Mike Riggan and Rickey Pel
tier. Three service pins were
awarded to Peter Hines and
Larry Peltier.
Larry Peltier was selected
senior patrol leader, with
Rickey Peltier leader of the
bear patrol and Mike Riggan
leader of the rattlesnake pa
trol. State Fire Warden Ralph
McKinstry presented forestry
awards to three members of
Troop 121 who had rendered
assistance beyond the call of
duty to the forest service in
combating the Thompson
creek fire last summer.
The awards, consisting of a
green guard pin and certifi
cate and a pocket knife bear
ing the forestry service em
blem, were presented to Peter
Hines, Allan Pope and Mike
Riggan. .
