Without Shell, a Mussel
Is Merely a Muscle
Without the protecting shell
a muscle is little more than
a muscle. It has an almond
shaped body, and can neither
see, hear, nor smell. Its ner
vous system consists of three
pairs of ganglia, situated in
the "foot." in the undevel
oped '"heat" and in the very
real digestive tract.
The creature has no brain
or spinal column, but it does
have a certain amount of
"gray matter" outside of
where the brain ought to be.
That is in the ganglion, where
nervous impulses sluggishly
act to put the bivalve in mo
tion. This mollusk is found in

Small Worlds
Around Us
By Lynn M. Watkins
both fresh and salt water.
When the land began to
emerge from an ancient
ocean many eons ago, some
of the mussels were ma
rooned. They adjusted them
selves to the fresh water and
have remained there ever
since. Over the thousands of
years of elapsed time they
have branched off into many
species. They still get by beau
tifully with a mouth, but no
jaws or saliva glands, and an
undeveloped "head."
Protect Body
The two shells that protect
the soft body meet all the
way around, fitting closely to
gether. A section of the body
fold along the back remains
always soft, acting as a hinge
for the two valves. This
hinge is elastic tissue. Com
pressed so that the tendency
of the two shells is to remain
open all the time, but held to
gether by a special muscle.
If the mollusk itself is killed,
the empty shell always will
be agape, the elastic hinge
snapping the two valves apart
when death comes to the
owner.
When alive, the mussel pro
jects a wedge-shaped section
of the body fold, called a
"foot," from the shell which
acts as a pulling lever as the
bivalve plows along in the
mud or sand. It is a very slow
and deliberate pace - even
slower than the so-called
! "snail's pace." But the mus-
! sel is never in a hurry. It
really isn't going anywhere.
In the fall of the year, as
the water cools, this common
mollusk unconsciously per
forms a peculiar performance,
an action which scientists can
not explain or understand. It
compresses a store of food
into a crystaline substance
that will be retained in the
stomach as a reserve supply
for the winter months.
During the fall, too, eggs
are ejected which are later
conveyed to the gills and car
ried until they develop into
tiny larvae. Each larva is
equipped with small hooks
which will serve as holding
hooks when the little creature
is ready for the next step of
its development.
When a small fish passes,
the larvae attempt, and usual
ly succeed, in hooking onto
the fins or gills of the fish.
The irritation sets up an
action in the chemistry of the
fish, which builds around the
point of attachment a section
of "scar tissue." This protects
the small mollusk until it is
ready to let loose and fall into
the mud of the pond or ocean
bottom.
Unwillingly, the fish plays
an important part in the life
of the mollusk, keeping it
from being carried away by
river currents or wave action
as well as some protection
from predators.
