Klamath Falls Oregon
Technical institute survived
the personal challenge of Red
Raider Gordon Carrigan last
night and dumped the South
ern Oregon college basketball
team 71-64.
The outcome enabled Port
land State to hang onto first
place in the Oregon Collegiate
conference although the Vik
ings were beaten by Oregon
college 73-69 also last night.
PSC is now 3-2 in the tight
race.
Carrigan potted six con
secutive two-handed set shots
for the Red Raiders in the
second half and was high
point man with 20. He also
kept OTI's Dennis McKee
from getting a field goal.
Rebounding played a big
part in the Owl win. OTI
snatched off 60 missed shots
to the Raiders' 43. Many Owl
"snares" were tipups.
Southern Oregon continu
ed its habit of hitting better
from the field than the op
position but nosed out the
Klamath team by just one
goal, 21 to 20. Oregon Tech
outdistanced SOC 31-22 from
the free toss line. The Raid
ers were whistled for 33 in
fractions and the Owls for
25.
Raiders Lead
Carrigan opened the scor
ing for the evening with a
long set shot. A field goal
from John Payne followed
and a pair of gifters from
Brad Flanary made the count
6-5 after four minutes.
The Raiders held the lead
until 8:55 remained in the
half. Jack Horton coupled a
field goal with Troy Koontz
to make the count 19-14 for
OTI before Carrigan hit again
from the field. The Raiders
never could quite catch up
and the Owls added six con
secutive gifters to take a 33
24 lead at the midway mark.
SOC whittled away at the
lead in the first half of the
second stanza. Flanary put
Raiders within one point on
a field shot and free throw.
Again the Raiders faltered
and the Owls pulled away.
Free Throws Pad
The Raiders of the Rogue
fought back again with the
help of Carrigan, Flanary,
and Dick Smith to narrow
the gap to 59-61 with 3:45
remaining. A series of free
throws put the Owls well in
front again.
Ingemar Issues
Ring Warning
Rochester, N.Y. -IUPD- Inge
mar Johansson, recipient of
the S10.000 Hickok Profession
al Athlete of the Year award,
warned Floyd Patterson Tues
day to '"break away from the
old people" if he wants a re
turn shot at the heavyweight
crown.
Johansson, who received the
diamond-studded, gold-buckle
belt at a dinner Monday night
stressed that if Patterson in
sisted upon having the Tele
prompter Corp. and Floyd
Patterson Enterprises control
the TV, radio and movies for
the return match, he might
defend against light heavy
weight champion Archie
Moore instead of Patterson.
Johansson issued his warn
ing while commenting on
Monday's proceedings at New
York City where state Atty.
Gen. Louis J. Lefkowitz start
ed court action to dissolve
Teleprompter and the Patter
son Enterprises for allegedly
conspiring to monopolize the
world's heavyweight boxing
championship.
Ingemar referred to Tele
prompter and Patterson En
terprises as the "old people."
He wants a new setup, with
open bidding for the TV, radio
and movies.
Fish can be located with a
miniature sonar which is
made for installation in small

Big Daddy Needs
To Be Meaner
San Francisco -(UPD- Gene
(Big Daddy) Lipscomb may be
a tiger on the professional
football fields-but he'll have
to get meaner if he hopes to
go places as a professional
wrestler.
The Baltimore Colts' pro
lineman of the year made a
triumphal debut Tuesday
night in a tag team match that
featured more than half a ton
of muscle.
But he didn't gouge an eye,
stomp on an opponent, or fling
the opposition into the ring
side seats.
"Big Daddy," at 297 pounds
was teamed with fellow Colt
Don Joyce, who came in at
272. They opposed Leo Nom
ellini, 266-pound lineman for
the San Francisco Forty
Niners, and bad boy Tom Rice
-just a shell of a man at 240.
The first fall came after 18
minutes when Rice-who sel
dom is nominated for popu
larity awards - was disquali
fied for kicking Joyce when
he was down.
Lipscomb ended the match
about nine minutes later by
pinning Rice, after blasting
him with a football - style
block.

New Group Has
Confusion, Too
Dallas, Tex. -(UPD The new
American Footb all league
wasted little time proving that
the rival National Football
league doesn't have a monop
oly on confusion.
It took only one day of the
league's first full - fledged
meeting to present a "crazy,
mixed - up k i d" impression
with a series of baffling pro
nouncements that left news
men scratching their heads in
wonder.
It all boiled down to the
fact that the league's seven
members heard franchise ap
plicants from Atlanta and
Oakland, then postponed any
definite action until at least
Thursday after hearing from
still another bidder-San Francisco-sometime
today.
. About . the only facts com
ing from the meeting without
contradiction were that Com
missioner Joe Foss and Pres
ident Lamar Hunt were for
mally elected to the jobs they
had been holding down for
many weeks.
