HUMANITARIAN DECISION
I recently read with thank
fulness that the Supreme
Court of Massachusetts has
upheld the
"Pound-Law."
This means
that in some
states, medi
cal schools
now can buy
from pounds
animals
which other
wise would be
dr. alvarez just destroy
ed. In the universities, some
of these animals will be oper
ated on, always under full
anesthesia, just as men and
women are operated on.
The wonderful feature of
all this is that when surgeons
have to develop some new
type of operation - like those
which, in the last few years
have given life and health to
hundreds of suffering chil
dren, formerly all doomed to
a cruel death with heart di
sease, the steps of the oper
ation can be worked out in
animals.
Right now operations are
being developed which can
give back health to some of
the persons who have suffer
ed a stroke. Other operations
are being designed which we
hope will some day put a
new thigh and leg and foot

type of operation, a number
of young people who were dy
ing of Brights disease' have
been restored to perfect
health by the transplantation
of a kidney taken from an
alike twin.
I wish 1 could sit down for
a half-hour with a lot of peo
ple who worry immensely
more about the comfort of a
few dogs than they do about
about the lives and health and
happiness of thousands of
children. '
I would like to turn over
with them the pages of just
one huge book I have, show
ing pictures of the scores of
operations that have been
worked out in recent years
just to patch up and make
presentable and able to live
the hundreds of thousands of
children who are born each
year with only half of their
urinary bladder, or no anal
opening, or a gullet that emp
ties into the lungs, or a miser
able cleft plate, or any one
of a hundred other defects.
The average person has no
conception of the brilliance
of modern surgery: no con
ception of the fact that much
more needs to be learned, and
no sympathy with the fact
that the new technics needed
will have to be worked out
first on animals. That old lie
- that these animals are not
anesthetized should not fool
anyone. Just try to imagine
a surgeon so stupid that, per
haps, while trying to sew two
tiny arteries together, would
insist on working on a strug
gling, howling beast, when
his anesthetist, with a few
whiffs of ether, could keep
the animal sound asleep and
quiet!
This seems to me to be so
obvious that I do not know
how supposedly sensible peo
ple all over the country can
possibly be taken in by the
century-old claims of people
who so hate all medical re
search that they want all of
our health-giving laboratories
to be closed up.
I worked for much of my
life in research laboratories,
and I never saw painful oper
ations being performed on
animals without anesthesia.
Incidentally, today, most ani
mal experimentation is done
on mice and rats by well
educated young women.

to send at least six satellites
and probes into space during
the next 100 days.
Informed sources said the
experiments will include a
deep-space probe toward the
orbit of the planet Venus, and
five earth satellites studying
new communications, naviga
tions and weather - charting
techniques.
Dependable space machin
ery such as Juno III and Thor-
Able will carry part of the
load. But during this splurge
they will get assistance from
newer rockets, including
Thor-Delta and combinations
using the monstrous power of
the Atlas intercontinental bal
listic missile.
No manmade objects - Rus
sian or American - have been
sent into space in more than
two months. Lunik II, which
took the moon's "backside" i
pictures, was the Soviet
Union's last success, more
than three months ago.
