Medford high's champion
ship in Class A-l and St.
Mary's co-title with Yoncalla
in Class B were the note
worthy gridiron achieve
ments. And, they had added
significance. So far as can be
determined, it was the first
time that two high schools
from the same Oregon city
captured state diadems in the
same sport in the same year.
For the Crusaders of St.
Mary"s, the grid laurels rep
resented their second state
crown in a banner year of
sports. They garnered the
state B mantle in track after
having also claimed the Class
C Hayward relays, tanta
mount to another Oregon
title.
Among the years highlights,
southern Oregon fans saw the
world women's champion
Raybestos Brakettes . play at
Camp White and Salem win
the Oregon women's softball
toga on the same field. The
'Crater Cubs of Central Point
brought honor to their com
munity with the Oregon Jun
ior' Baseball association
crown. Oregon Bow Hunters
held their state broadhead
tourney at Camp White.
Bowling Expands
There was expansion of
bowling with the opening of
new Roxy Ann lanes and en
largement of Medford lanes.
Southern Oregon Independ
ent Basketball league com
pleted its first season of op
eration and tennis took an
upswing through the efforts
of Rogue Valley Tennis club.
Rifle and pistol shooting and
archery benefited by comple
tion of Medford Rifle and Pis
tol club's indoor range.
A Medford city recreation
department was formed and
provided increased summer
activities for youth in coop
eration with the local school
system. The summer baseball
program was enlarged and
all-comers track inaugurat
ed. Similar meets were held
in Ashland city-Southern Ore
gon college cooperation.
Drag racing had another
big year, climaxed by the

Review of Sports
A review of the various
sports brings the recollection
that Klamath Falls in the

Class B were high school bas
ketball champions. Christie's
of Grants Pass won Independ
ent league honors. Grants
Pass and Illinois Valley highs,
in their respective classes,
were district wrestling cham
pions. Grants Pass, Phoenix and
St. Mary's dominated in Class
A-l, A-2 and B prep track, the
GP Cavemen taking the
Rogue relays and district
pennants. Phoenix was sec
ond to SM in the Little Rogue
and Hayward relays and each
of the schools won its district
title. State Class B track had
a southern Oregon flavor
with St. Mary's. Jacksonville
and -Merrill one-two-three in
the Oregon meet. Crater high

In baseball Medford high
won its conference and went
to state semi-finals. Prospect
