Jerome S. Laura resents
my ambition.
Laura S. - He doesn't con
sider me at all.
Jerome S.-My wife and I
are in our early 20's. We have
been married three years and
have a year-old daughter. Our
only serious problem is my
ambition. My wife thinks I
have too much of it.
We got married when I was
still in college and working
part time. I immediately start
ed working full time and go
ing to college part time. It
will now take me another
year to get my degree.- After
that time I want to get a
master's and doctor s degree.
All of this will take about
eight or nine years at the
rate I'm going.
My parents are willing to
help us by having us live in
their very large, comfortable
house until I get through
school. Then I can finish up
in four years. I will be able
to get an administrative job
and in no time we'll be on
our feet with a wonderful
future. But Laura is unwill
ing to do this for me.
' Laura S. - When we got
married, Jerry and I agreed
that what we both wanted
most was to be on our own.
He said no matter how rough
the going got we should have
our own place and never have
to live with parents.
Now, after three years of
rough going he is ready to
give up - but I'm not. My in
laws are O.K., but I'd hate to
have tc deal with them every
waking hour of the day -which
is exactly what I'd be
doing. Jerry would be at
school or in his room study
ing. Jerry doesn't consider me
at all. I once wanted to go
to college too, but it's too
late now. While he is away
at school nearly every night
of the week I have to stay
home with the baby. It's true
he works hard at his job and
at school, but he enjoys this
work. I've had all the hard
ships and now he wants to
APPLEGATE VALLEY
'Steamboat" Ranch Sold

. Applegate Valley-A real es
state deal just completed here
involves the sale of the
"Steamboat" ranch of 160
acres on Carberry creek to
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Haines
of Dunsmuir. The property
was purchased from Lynn
Stone and La Verne Fields,
sawmill owners of Williams
creek, and the new owners
will take possession in a few
days. They expect to stock
the ranch with cattle, accord
ing to E. W. Kubli of Medford
who negotiated the sale.
The ranch first was home
steaded in 1883 by George C.
Culy. father of A. B. Culy of
Medford, and at that time, the
heyday of the Steamboat
mine, included the presently
adjoining George Dawson
ranch. Culy ran 500 head of
cattle and 30 head of horses,
raising his own saddle horses.
Culy, who operated the ranch
for 26 years, also had a pack
of hounds to combat varmints.
The upper end of the ranch
was called "Battle Bar" after
an Indian battle, according to
A. B. Culy.
Mrs. Harry Helms is spend
ing a month in California as
a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Mose
Wagner, Long Beach, and her
daughter, Mrs. Frank Morri
son, Oakland.
Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Smith
are building a new home on
their dairy ranch at Ruch.
The building is being con
tracted and is a 2-bedroom
frame structure with fire
place. River observers say that
Big Applegate is only a little
higher than in the summer,
and that the green moss ac
cumulation of the summer
flow, ordinarily washed away
with the first tail rise, sun is.
apparent in the river bottom.
And neither have any salmon
been observed.
Both extension groups of
the Applegate valley were to
hold a combined ?eting
Tuesday. Feb. 23 at the
Grange hall, when local lead
ers were to give a project on
synthetic fabrics. Women of
the lower unit will conduct
the meeting, and their lead
ers will be Mrs. Francis
Krouse and Mrs. George
Brown. A potluck dinner is
planned. This will eliminate
the first-Wednesday meeting
of the upper unit.

Sacred Heart hospital Thurs

are moving to Florence, Ore.,
for temporary residence.

make things still harder for
me. I can't take it any more.
The Council: We get the
impression that both Jerry
and Laura are inconsiderate.
We do not blame Laura for
objecting to moving into her
in-laws' home. But her whin
ing resentment of her hus
band's activities and plans is
another story. No wonder
Jerry gets the idea that she
objects to his ambition rather
than to his method of achiev
ing his goal.
On the other hand, Jerry
should have recognized that
his wife needs companionship,
stimulation and social activi
ty. His deep preoccupation
with his own desires appears
to have blinded him to hers.
Both Jerry and Laura will
have to make a strenuous ef
fort to change their patterns
if they don't want their mari
tal ship to founder. All of
Jerry's hard work and high
hopes won't amount to much
if his home life is miserable.
Jerry must recognize his
wife's right to happiness, even
while he is a student. If
necessary, he should take 12
years to get his graduate de
grees. He should spend more
time with his wife and try to
help her expand her horizons
as he is expanding his.
We suspect that Laura has
some fears about Jerry's
growing away from her as he
becomes more educated and
her mental outlook is check
ed by her home responsibili
ties. This need not be the
case. It is not too late for her
to get the education she de
sires. She should investigate
the courses that are within
nearly everyone's reach. It
may not be possible for her
to get a college degree at this
time, but she can study and
learn and get the feeling of
confidence that comes with
knowledge. Complaining of
all she has missed will only
undermine her own morale
and her husband's interest in
her.

store, has been calling on lo-
i cal farmers and in this balmy
weather tells of cutting
through six feet of ice to wa
ter the cows in Montana, cut
ting ice in the steps for the
bossies to climb down. Some
times sprinkling hay on the
ice was necessary to entice
them. And only occasionally
would it be that the hole was
not filled and frozen over next
morning so the whole opera
tion could be repeated. An
derson is getting feed routes
established in the community
and expects to accommodate
the grower, with only a few
rabbits or chickens, as well
as the bigger farmer.

Study New City
Eugene - (LTD - A committee
was formed here Sunday night
with the eventual goal of uni
fying Eugene, Springfield and
suburban areas into a new
city.
Jim Weaver of Eugene,
spokesman for the group, said
'"creation of a whole new city
with more than 100,000 popu
lation would give our area
the stature it deserves."
Former State Rep. Richard
Eyemann, also a committee
member, said "all of Lane
county will achieve real gains
in terms of new industry, new
jobs and employment stability
. . .," from such a city.

a member of the University

cation of areas.
Weaver said that during
lengthy discussions of the
matter in the past "almost
everyone agreed it would be
