Mr. E. N. - My daughter is
friendly with a girl who was
involved in a scandal.
- Wanda N. I can't ignore
her the way some people do.
Mrs. E. N. I am terribly
upset about my 17 -year -old
daughter who has recently be
come very friendly with a girl
involved in a scandal in our
community.
This girl had an affair with
a married man while she
was a senior in high school.
Everyone knew about it ex
cept the wife. When the wife
found out she became serious
ly sick and that broke the
whole thing up. The girl's
family sent her away for a
few months. Now she is back
and my daughter has made a
friend of her!
I have talked myself deaf,
dumb and blind, but Wanda
will pay no attention to me
when I tell her this is no
friend for her. People will
think all kinds of things about
her. Birds of a feather flock
together, I always say. I
know Wanda isn't like Karen,
but how will other people
know?
Wanda N. - I don't think
it's right for everyone to come
down on somelike like a
swarm of locusts just because
of one mistake. Karen fell
in love with this man before
- she knew he was married and
. after she found ou., it was
just too late.
Karen lives on our street
and I can't ignore her the way
some people do. She has join
ed the same club I belong to
at the "Y" in our community,
so we have gotten into the
habit of coming home to
gether. Occasionally we go to
the movies. But we don't go
out with boys together be
cause Karen is a year and a
half older and wouldn't go
nut with mv crowd.
I don't say Karen has to be
my best friend, but I do like j
" her and I wouldn't give her j
up just because of some nasty
gossips.
The Council: Mrs. E. N.
seems to be blowing up this
"friendship" out of propor
tion and is thus glamorizing it
in her daughter's eyes.
Undoubtedly it is disturb
ing to Mrs. E. N. to see her
teen-age daughter walk down
the street with a girl who al
most succeeded in breaking
up a home, but she should
try to control her emotional
reactions enough to take in
the entire situation.
If Karen were Wanda's only
friend and if the girls were
spending all their free time
together, there might indeed
be something to worry about.
The fact that Wanda also goes
out with her own crowd and
that she meets Karen in an
acceptable social setting
should be enough to reassure
her mother. Malicious tongues
might wag at anything under
the sun, but no well-meaning,
sensible person should con
demn Wanda solely because
of her casual friendship with
a girl with a "past."
On the other hand, we think
Mrs. E. N. is right to be con
cerned about any influence
Karen might have on Wanda's
moral outlook. The other girl
should certainly not be dis
cussing her affair with Wan
da. If she does, Wanda ought
to recognize that she is hear
ing from a very troubled
young woman and she should
steer clear of any entangle
ment with her.
