proposal today that Austin
Gunsel be given the job on a
one-year "trial" basis.
If this move failed, it ap
peared unlikely that the bick
ering owners could decide
upon a successor to Bert Bell
during the present meeting.
In that case, Gunsel would
continue to serve as interim
head of the NFL for another
year.
Art Rooney. president of
the Pittsburgh Steelers, said
he would propose the election
of uunsei on a snort - term
basis when the owners re
convene today.

behind Gunsel.
George Halas of the Chi
cago Bears, who has abstained

cago Cardinals, was ready to
join the Gunsel camp in an
effort to resolve the two-day
stalemate.
Nine votes were necessary
for the election to the office
held by Bert Bell from 1946
until his death last Oct. 11.
Leahy, the home-loving, 49-year-old
San Francisco Forty
Niners' attorney, had six or
seven votes on the 14th or
15th ballot, depending upon
varying sources in this most
confused of NFL meetings.

O'Leary, Ken Venturi and
Tommy Jacobs. And six men
at 71. But after that the scores
sky-rocketed all out of pro
portions, with some fine pro
fessionals shooting in the 90s
The great shotmakers of
the world had their troubles.

Casper had a 74. National
PGA champ Bobby Rosburg
had a whopping 84. Former
National Open Champions Dr
Cary Middlecoff and Lloyd
Mangrum each had 77.

ketball race this week end.
The Bearcats, tied with Lin-
field at 4-1, play host to Lewis
and Clark tonight and travel
to Portland to meet the same
team Saturday night. Lewis
and Clark is 0-3 in the con
ference and has lost 11
straight.
Pacific will attempt to stop
its long losing streak at Mc
Minnville Saturday night
when it tangles with Linfield.
The Wildcats, however, are
top-heavy favorites. It's the
only other conference game
scheduled this week end.

Jack Kramer loves amateur
tennis - but he is ready for a
declaration of "open warfare"
if the Simon-Pures go through
with a plan advanced by Jean
Borotra of France.
While the four major tennis
nations of the 'world - Aus
tralia, England, France and
United States - consider plans
for adopting open tennis tour
naments by no later than 1961,
Borotra has dropped a time
bomb into the future of the
game.
"He proposes that one ama
teur player each year be al
lowed to dicker with tennis
promoters for all the expense
money he can get," says Kra
mer. "In other words, he
would still be considered an
amateur even if he got 82,000
appearance money' for a
tournament and was eliminat-1
ed in the first match.
Personal Affront
"I would consider this a per
sonal affront - an attempt to
put me out of business.
Kramer is all in favor of
the open tennis tournaments
but thinks that the limitations
proposed that call for only
one open event in each of the
"big four" countries each year
is not right.
"There are few places an
open tennis tournament could
be made to pay off," says
Jack. "But where the facilities
are available and the interest
keen, I think there should be
open tourneys.
"In the United States, the
only places right now where
an open tourney would pay off
are in New York (Forest Hills)
and Los Angeles.
Space Needed
You have to hold the events
outdoors because you need
more than one court."
Other places that would
make good spots for open
tourneys, says Kramer, are:
Australia - Brisbane, Ade
laide, Sydney, and Melbourne.
England - Wimbledon and
possibly the indoor Wembley
Stadium.
France Paris.
Italy - Rome and eventual
ly Milan.
Japan - Tokyo.
Africa Johannesburg.
West Germany Berlin and
Hamburg.
India - Calcutta.
Philippines Manila.
Argentina - Buenos Aires.
Kramer thinks there should
be "at least" 15 "open" tour
naments every year - and that
way there would be a true
world champion selected each
season.

Haverhill, Mass. -(UPD Leo
Durocher, who earned the
nickname "Lippy" through
more than 25 years of umpire
baiting as a major league
player and manager, Thurs
day night switched sides and
labeled the arbiters' salary
scale "disgraceful."
Durocher, speaking at the
annual Haverhill Journal
baseball dinner, said, "umpir
ing is one of the loneliest jobs
in the world. They are prac
tically slaves and yet their
pay is disgraceful."
The former manager of the
old Brooklyn Dodgers and
New York Giants said umpires
"are not even included in a
pension fund. They should re
ceive at least $15,000 a year
for their jobs."

United Air Lines
To Start Jet Service
San Francisco -(UPD- United
Air Lines announced Thurs
day it will begin jet service
between San Francisco and
Seattle-Tacoma March 1.
The company said there
would be two -DC8 flights
daily in each direction, with
flying time of one hour 50
minutes. The flights also will
connect with Los Angeles.
