Within 50 Years
Los Angeles-UPD-A medical
leader says that within 50
years human beings could de
velop into a race of supermen
with perfect health, high in
telligence and a life expectan
cy of 125 years.
; Dr. E. Vincent Askey, president-elect
of the American
Medical Association, said
mankind stands at the thresh
hold of an age in which he
will be able to control evolu
tion. "Before long man will pos
sess the knowledge to plan
the intelligence, physique and
other characteristics of his
offspring," Askey said.
This control will include
predetermining the weight,
height, mental capacity and
even color of hair and eyes
of a child, he said.
"Until now we've been
leaving such matters as here
dity to n a t u r e," he said.
"We've had only a few mild
experiments in eugenics and
controlled mating.
Askey said he considered it
"no wild speculation ' to as
sume that structure of chrom
osomes which determines the
hereditary characteristics of
a human being soon will be
subject to control through ra
diation. "In this way we could eas
ily eradicate hereditary de
fects, and produce a race
which would have a life ex
pectancy of 125 or more years
combined with high mental
capacity," he said.

Lake Creek Grange
Master Bob Gilkey con
ducted the first meeting of the
new year. We welcome as new
members Vera Welch and
Kenneth Owen. Also voted to
become a member is Glenn
L. Burg.
Ira Woolfolk, agriculture
committee, reported on a
night school session scheduled
at Eagle Point. Topics to be
studied will include soil irri
gation and land drainage. Fee
for the course is $5.
Murray Bartling, fire in
surance agent, announced
that he hopes to have a speech
student from Eagle Point
High school as a guest at the
February meeting.
The dance committee, Mur
ray Bartling and Ernest and
Faye Burrell, were given a
vote of thanks. The dances
are proving popular and we
hope to cover the rest of the
roof of the hall. The HEC
chairman, Nora Bradshaw,
was given a vote-of thanks.
Mrs. Bradshaw is a charter
member of the grange.

mittee appointments: agricul
ture committee, Ira Woolfolk,
Leland Charley, Ernest Bur
rell; educational committee,
Faye George, Pearl Bartling,
Camille Gilkey; legislative
committee, Loyd George,
Claus Charley, Ellyn Charley,
Bob Gilkey; ways and means
committee, Ernest Burrell,
Faye Burrell, Murray Bart
ling; home economics chair
man, Nora Bradshaw; fire in
surance agent, Murray Bart
ling. Each member was asked to
bring wood to the February
meeting.
Lecturer Betty Bradshaw
asked members to give a reso
lution for year 1960. Camille
Gilkey read a letter contain
ing a resolution. The final
number on the program was
having the men design a new
creation, from paper, on a
man member.
The next Grange meeting
will be held Feb. 12 at 8:30
p.m.
Grange Festival
Plans for a Jackson County
Grange Festival are getting
under way. A second meeting
to discuss plans for the mid
summer event was held at the
Central Point Grange hall last
week with 13 Granges repre
sented.

Grange presided at the meet
ing. He is chairman of the fes
tival. Other officers are Alva
Walker, Gold Hill Grange,
vice chairman; Dee Hendrick-
son, Central Point Grange, re
cording secretary; and Mrs
Anna Scott, Applegate
Grange, corresponding secre
tary.
Committees were appointed
to determine time, place, en
tertainment, contests, prizes
and refreshments for the
event. Committees will report
at the next meeting in the
Central Point Grange hall
Feb. 22. Women are asked to
bring sandwiches.
