National YMCA
Week Observed
National Young Men's
Christian association week
will be observed at the Med
ford YMCA this week with
the annual meeting Tuesday
night and an open house Sun
day, Jan. 24.
The Tuesday meeting will
start at 6:30 p.m. with a pot
luck dinner. Nine directors
will be elected for three-year
terms, volunteers will be rec
ognized, and entertainment is
planned.
Open house next Sunday
will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Dr.
Earl Johnson is in charge of
arrangements with Mr. and
Mrs. Gene Chamberlain in
charge of refreshments.
Activities scheduled during
the week include a square
dance instruction period at the
social hall Monday night, and
a free basketball throw con
test for boys between 8 and
18 years old Wednesday. A
swimming exhibition is sched
uled Thursday if work on the
pool is completed, Robert
Jones, secretary, said.
YMCAs throughout the
country will observe Nation
al YMCA week.
The first YMCA in North
America was founded in Mon
treal in 1851, and a short time
later, the first association was
organized in this country in
Boston. There are 1,961
YMCAs with a membership
of more than 2,656,000 in the
country and Canada today.

Ray Lewis took a special
group of ninth grade students
to entertain the meeting of
the Retired Teachers associa
tion at the Girls' Community
club, Monday, Jan. 11.
Small colts, rearing stal
lion, sentle mares, and
heavy work horses made up
the exhibit in the library
showcase emphasizing t he
many kinds of horse stories
the library has. Cora Kave
nor, Jamie Briggs, Marilyn
Beihn, Sharon Hale, and
Kathy Crosby contributed the
china, plastic, and hard-carved
horses shown in the collection.
Stamp club members were
ahown the large collection of
stamps belonging to Mrs. Er
ward Leech, of the Jackson
County Stamp club, when she
spoke to the group Monday.
Some of the more interesting
collections included a series
from Japan going back to the
oldest known stamp up to the
most recent Japanese stamp,
and her collection of stamps
from all over the world hon
oring the Boy Scout organization.
In the display case in the
main hall a different kind of
display is being shown. It's a
sample of clothing made by
McLoughlin girls in Miss
Ruth Osborn's clothing class
es. Janet Eddy, Sandra
Grimes. Marsha Williams,
Lorraine Hampton, and Sher
ron Smets are the excellent
seamstresses who contributed
to the display.
. Library club members were
guests at the regular Mc
Loughlin School Radio club
broadcast over KYJC Satur
day evening. Marilyn Conrad
was the moderator for the
group with Valerie Knights,
Karen South, and Jeanette
McArthur telling of the func
tion of the Library club and
the services the library offers
to students.
Semester examination time
Is approaching with special
subject tests scheduled this
week. Nine week finals and,
for ninth graders, semester
finals, are scheduled for the
week of Jan. 25.
Intramural basketball was
held in the gyms Saturday
for all three grades.
The McLoughlin PTA will
hold its winter meeting Thurs
day, Jan. 21. at 7:30 p.m. Dr.
Leonard Mayfield is sched
uled to speak about his re
cent trip to Russia. All par
ents are urged to attend.
Eighth graders will hold
their annual party Jan. 22, in
the Girls' gymnasium from
7:30 to. 10 pjtn. Admission
will be by tickets purchased
this week at school. Students
working on committees are
Leslie Stanley. Barbara Cham
pion. Nicky Ober, Pam Jones,
Marilyn W a t c k i n s. Mike
Barnes, Steve Ettles, and Bob
Walker. Parents chaperoning
the affair are Mr. and Mrs.
Jim Sheldon. Mrs. Champion,
and Dr. and Mrs. Stanley. All
eighth grade students and
teachers are invited to attend.
