lost interest in treating a lack
of hydrochloric acid in the
stomach because I found that
nearly all the people with
this lack have as good diges
tion as anyone else. Also, I
found that after examining
hundreds of apparently heal
thy people over 50, that one
in four had no hydrochloric
acid. The impression I gain
ed was that, as we grow old,
some of us lose our stomach
acid just as some of us men
lose the hair on the top of our
head. I can see no sense in giv
ing acid to these acid-less peo
ple, except in the very t rare
case in which the person suf
fers from a diarrhea that can
be relieved by the taking of
acid. Those persons who are
taking dilute acid must Tinse
their mouth afterwards with
water; otherwise they will
lose the enamel on the back
surface of their front teeth.

signal then is some numbness
and tingling in his legs. Per
sons with any tendency to a
primary" or hereditary or

each month a few pills con
taining vitamin B 12. I know
of no medicine that will make
the acid come back after it
has gone.

Uveitis is an inflammation
of one of the impotrant tissues
that make up the eyeball. It is
often a serious disease which
can cause much loss of vision.
It accounts for 10 per cent of
blindness in this country. It
often looks like an inflamma
tion, but for many years the
best eye specialists have had
only a vague idea as to what

Men Not To Be
Left in Peril
Fairbanks, Alaska - (LTD -The
Air Force Thursday was
considering the immediate
withdrawal of the 16 men re
maining on ice station Charlie
in the Arctic Ocean because
of new fissures in the floe
only 500 feet from the camp
occupied by the men.
Brig. Gen. Gordon H. Aus
tin, commander of the 11th
air division at Ladd Air Force
Base here, said that the Air
Force has "no intention" of
leaving the men in peril in
order to remove the scientific
equipment which remains on
the floe.
To Inspect Floe
Austin and Capt. James F.
Smith, an expert on ice island
breakups, were to inspect the
ice floe early today and with
Capt. Arthur Schroeder, head
of the operation on Charlie,
would decide whether to
withdraw the men immedi
ately.
Withdrawal of men and
equipment from Charlie be
gan a week ago when the ice
station began disintegrating.
The Air Force had hoped to
remove the scientific equip
ment from the floe, located
450 miles north of Point Bar
row, Alaska, before it broke
up completely.
Austin and Smith flew to
Charlie when the new fissure
was reported and were sched
uled to return here at about
8 a.m. p.s.t. with word on
whether immediate withdraw
al was necessary.
The ice floe has been re
duced in size to a mile by a
mile and a quarter. This is
less than one fifth the size it
was when the disintegration,
caused by "internal pressure
and temperatures," began.
The "orderly withdrawal"
begun a week ago has been
hampered in recent days by
temperatures here as low as
50 degrees below zero and
poor visibility. The tempera
ture on the ice floe today was
about 35 degrees below zero
and winds of 12 knots pre
vailed.
The 16 men now occupying
the ice station include four
civilian scientists and 12 mil
itary personnel. Three of the
scientists and nine of the mil
itary men were members of
the crew on the ice floe. The
other men were flown in to
aid in the withdrawal oper
ation.
