A PRIM, PURITANICAL person from the sticks was mak
ing her first visit to New York, and her nephew insisted,
over her protest, that an autumnal afternoon at the horss

The nephew steered his

dow, where the clerk re
deemed her ticket for
sixteen crisp $10 bills.
Auntie swept them up in
her purse, then shook a finger at the clerk, "Young man,"
the admonished, Let this be a lesson to you!"

Youths Must Register
When They Become 18
- Youths who do not register
ror the draft within five days
after their 18th birthday may
be declared delinquent and be
ordered for immediate indue
tion into the armed forces.
The local board of the se
lective service system an
nounced that it has become
necessary to put the penalty
into effect because of the in
creased failure of youths to
register on time.
An appeal is being made to
parents, especially mothers,
who are concerned about
their son's draft status to

step toward allowing Oregon
State college to offer liberal
arts majors was taken Tues
day. . -
The State Board of Higher
Education's curriculum com
mittee gave its stamp of ap
proval to 20 "strong minor"
groups of courses at OSC.
The board recently decided
to allow Oregon State to offer
liberal arts majors providing
they include strong minors in
science.
Four of the six members of
the board were present. Com
mittee approval usually means
board approval.
The committee told the OSC
group to revise its proposals
for minors in foods, nutrition,
institution, management and
- textiles.
Botany Minor OK'
The committee said that in
the case of the approved gen
eral science minor it would
reconsider in two years and
hoped to increase require
ments. A botany minor one
hour short of board standards
was approved as the commit
tee said the quality of the
course, not the lack of one
term - hour, should decide
whether a minor is accept
able. A discussion on the chemis
try minor brought a question
from Dr. Ralph E. Purvine of
Salem: "What good will it
do?" -
Dr. William Crooks, head of
the OSC psychology depart
ment, said: "He will know
something of chemistry; that's
all."
It was brought out that a
student who completes the
minor would be able to teach
chemistry, in high school to
which Crooks replied:
' "Regrettably yes."
Auto Mechanics
Courses Slated
Three auto mechanics
courses will be offered by the
adult education department of
the Medford public schools
starting Feb. 15, Lindsay M.
Vinsel, director, has announc
ed. The 12-week courses will
include automotive chassis,
which will meet Monday and
Thursday evening; internal
combustion engines, which
will meet Tuesday evenings;
and fuel system and carbure
tion, which will meet Wed
nesday evening.
The classes will be held at
Medford High school between
6:30 and 10:30 p.m., Vinsel
said.

garding tuition and registra
tion may be obtained from the
adult education department at
Medford High school.

all young men must register

military duty who have not
registered before must regis
ter within 30 days of their dis

A draft board spokesman
pointed out that the purpose
of registration is not only to
provide lists of prospective
peacetime draftees, but also
to let the government know
what manpower would be
available should total war mo
bilization be necessary.
Registrants are cautioned
to bring to their place of re
gistration, a birth certificate
or a statement from their par
ents or guardians verifying
their; birth date, birth place
and full legal name.
Local board No. 17 is locat
ed in the federal building at
33 North Riverside ave. and
is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30
p.m., Mondays through Fridays.

Gunnar said Oregon's Demo
cratic party "is turning back
the clock to the era of boss
rule and the smoke - filled
room."
GOP Seeks Reaction
"The issues facing the. peo
ple in 1960," he declared,
"are so complex and serious
they warrant more than a one
day study. For this reason the
Republican party has been at
work since last summer get
ting grass roots reaction and
participation in a" statewide
policy and action committee,
and its reports will soon be
released."
Gunnar said the state Demo
cratic convention is "the
brain child of a handful of
Democratic party wheelhorses
who are using it to get tight
fisted control -of the party
while describing the conven
tion in the usual glowing
terms." .
