WHAT'S IT WORTH?
Washington -(UPD- A farmer
can figure out how much he
can afford to pay for electri
cal equipment by considering
the amount and value of the
time the machinery saves him,
say economists at Purdue
University. For example, if
labor is worth $1 per hour
and a machine saves 10 min
utes a day, the farmer can
afford to pay S300 for the
machine. Or he can pay $1,100
for a machine that saves 30
minutes per day and 52,250
for one that saves 60 minutes
a day.

Classified Ads in
London Times Offer
Humorous Reading
London-(UPD -Some of Bri
tain's most hilarious reading
can be found every morning
in a dull gray column of
classified ads on the front
page of the great gray London
Times.
For the most part, the ads
in this- famed "personals"
column are in dead earnest.
But for unintentional humor,
take a few examples:
"Granny is coming to live
with us but we can't take
Pussy. Will someone offer
him a home and avert feline
disaster? Please help. . ."
"Old castle required within
two years for one of Britain's
oldest noble families. At least
partly habitable, modern con
veniences unnecessary. . ."
"For sale: Handsome but
small 4-engine airliner. . ."
Thanks to 170-odd years of
such ads, the Times "person
als" column has become a
national tradition.
Everything Offered
Anything and everything is
offered there-from a genuine
Caribbean kingship to the
services of a "gentleman, 29,
married, keen foxhunter."
One man appealed for some
one to lend him a live walrus
to take to lunch. Someone
else w an t e d rattlesnakes,
dead or alive, as mascots.
The Times "personals" col
umn contains a few personal
messages. It's an "agony" col
umn without agony-no lone-
Happy Camp Man
Faces Assault
Yreka - Mrs. Carrol Anette
Blake. 17, of Happy Camp,
was listed in critical condi
tion in Siskiyou General hos
pital here Monday following
an incident in which she suf
fered a gun shot wound, Sis
kiyou county sheriff's depu
ties reported.
Deputies said her husband,
Charles Wayne Blake, 20, was
arrested and charged with as
sault with a deadly weapon.
The incident occurred,
deputies said, in the family
car. They started arguing and
Blake displayed a gun. Depu
ties said he fired at Mrs.
Blake, who was in the driver's
seat.
Physicians said Mrs. Blake
was expected to live.

ly hearts or lovelorn ads.
But it's required reading
for foreign journalists and
anyone wanting a hearty
laugh with the morning tea.
It appears every morning in
the same spot in one of the
world's few major newspa
pers which-despite war, peace
or death of kings-still de
votes its full front page to
classified ads.
Take a few more examples:
"Will any baron not re
quiring his robes next Tues
day please write box-."
"Skipper required to com
mand Diesel yacht. .. ."
"Gout-Can anyone who has
experienced this painful dis
ease help a great sufferer by
telling any cure or special
ist?" "Rolls-Royce, one titled
owner, perfect. . ."
"Original manuscript of
two-fifths of Richard Strauss's
'electra.' Offers?"
"Country house with some
land for slow sale. Last time
for sale 1542. Contains
eighteenth - century wallpa
per." Is it adventure you want?
"Berths available in amphi
bious D.U.K.W. safari to
Bechuan aland, Nyasaland,
East Africa." "Girl crew for
yacht: Owner of 16-ton yacht
. . . seeks two sisters or
friends as crew for world
cruise."
Wants Job Under Sun
Looking for someone to
hire away from England's
dreary winters? "Browned-off
sporting bachelor . . . wants
any interesting job under the
sun." "Ex-National Service of
ficer will do anything inter
esting, preferably abroad
where it's hot."
But the mainstays of the
Times "personals" are the
just plain unusual.
"Untitled old Etonian
forced to sell garage in heart
of West End; three-bedroom-ed
house thrown in. . ."
"Label collectors-Write for
particulars of new society to
Secretary, Labologists' So
ciety. . ."
Press agents are not above
using the Times' "personals"
for their own purposes when
they can sneak in. Recently
a lot of curiosity was aroused
by an appeal that ran several
days for "an authentic royal
jewelled crown, valued at a
quarter-million pounds ($750,
000) or more." Turned out
that old trickster Noel Cow
ard "needed" the crown for a
picture he was making.
State Conference
On Crime Slated
In Salem Feb. 16
Salem The state depart
ment of justice will sponsor
a one-day statewide confer
ence on crime prevention in
Salem Feb. 16, Robert Y.
Thornton, attorney general,
has announced.
Purpose of the conference
will be to appraise the ade
quacy of the crime preven
tion efforts and determine
how they can be improved,
Thornton said.
Public leaders from
throughout the state with
specialized training and ex
perience have been invited
to participate. A major goal
of the conference would be
recommendations lor prac
tical and feasible action on
state, county and city levels,
he added.
Persons participating will
be asked for a brief presen
tation outlining suggestions,
and an evaluation committee
will coordinate the proposals
in a written report, Thornton
said.
Increase in Crime
Thornton pointed out that
Oregon is "faced with an
ever - mounting increase in
the rate of crime and delin
quency." As a result, the pub
lic is seeking more criminal
laws and stricter punishment
of violators, he noted.
"Citizen groups are organ
izing to seek new methods of
dealing with sex criminals,
obscene literature, and other
practices that tend to incite
law violations. Related to this
subject," he continued, "there
is at present a legislative in
terim committee preparing
bills to tighten our law en
forcement procedures."
Thornton estimated that
crime in Oregon is now cost
ing each man, woman and
child in the state about $500
per year. He noted that crime
in America is increasing more
than five times faster than
the population, according to
recent FBI statistics.
VALUE OF FOOD SALES
Ithaca, N.Y. (UPD Special
food sales are likely to at
tract people to an entire line
of products,' not just to the
item advertised, according to
a survey conducted by the
State College of Agriculture
at Cornell University. One re
searcher explained it this way:
"Seeing a brand of catsup on
sale might remind a shopper
that she needs catsup and she
might buy her usual brand in
stead of the one specially
priced."

In the average home, over 400 HOURS A YEAR are spent on the thankless
drudgery of dishwashing. In many homes, much of this work is done by poor
old Dad. (This is so Mom will occasionally have time to do something besides
wash dishes.) 1
Cut it out, girls. Just get poor old Dad to put a sparkling new ELECTRIC
DISHWASHER in your kitchen. He'll like the idea.
You can remind him, too, that dishes and utensils come from an electric
dishwasher sterilized and almost entirely bacteria-free . . . scalded in water
hotter than the hands can touch. The electric way is the happy and healthful
way to wash dishes.
