Ohio State's Buckeyes, the

Jinxed Huskies
To Invade Bav Area
United Press International
The basketball record cf
the Washington Huskies is a
so-so 7-6 so far this year, but
all that proves is that figures
can be misleading.
It could just as well be 11-2
or so, for the jinx-ridden Hus
kies have lost their four Big
Five league encounters by a
total of five points. They
showed that they may be
about ready to shake off their
hex with a sound 57-51
thumping of tough Oregon
State Monday night.
Husky hopes that the best
is yet to come are centered
around soph pivotman Bill
Hanson, who popped in 20
Monday, and gets tougher
each week.
Washington invades the Bay
area this week end and meets
California Saturday. Husky
rooters think Hanson can hold
his own against Cal's back
board behemoth, Darrall Im
hoff, and they have their fin
gers crossed.
In other action Monday,
Gonzaga disposed of Eastern
Washington, 81-59. Frank
Burgess of the Zags went on
his usual scoring rampage
witn 35 markers. Dick Koford
had 25 for the losers.
. Most of tonight's action
takes place in the West Coast
Athletic conference where
1 e a g u e-leading Pepperdine
(2-0) meets surprisingly tough
Loyola Lions (1-1). Meanwhile
Santa Clara (2-1) figures to
have a breather against San
Jose State (0-1) and College
of Pacific (1-1) would seem to
have too many guns for USF
(0-2). San Francisco State
meets Sacramentd State in a
Far West conference game.

ball professors, a certain
amount of loose and liberal
translation is necessary.
Each week the tall, sad
eyed gentlemen gather, as ex
ample, at a meeting of the
Basketball Writers associa
tion. The writers eat all they
can get. The coaches bend
morosely to their , soft boiled
eggs. Then, when the oratori
cal period arrives, they un
fold their lanky lengths and
give out with thousands of
words of seeming platitudes.
Less Said the Better . .
Unless you translate.
As example, the coach who
was beaten at the foul line
will proclaim in weary tones:
"I don't want to criticize
the refs, so the less said the
better."
Translated, this means: Of
all the blind bandits I've ever
run across, these were the
worst. If they're not on the
other schools payroll, I miss
my guess. I'd give a half year's
salary to get 'em alone in a
closet and hang a hook on
'em.
"We just weren't hitting."
Translation: My kids must
have been out all night on
a party because I know none
of them study- It looks to me
like they all need glasses be
cause the Bloomer Girls could
hit the basket better with a
volley ball.
Scouting Grade Schools
"We don't have the height."
Meaning, the guys who dig
up our kids must be scouting
the grade schools. Everybody
else has a seven footer and
I'm expected to make like a
genius with a crowd of under
sized midgets.
"They're a fine team and
we were lucky to beat em."
It's simply that they were
worse than we are. We should
have put 'em away left hand
ed and both of us oughta pay
to have people watch us.
"We got top effort out of
our kids."
My monkeys finally looked
alive and began to earn their
scholarships and they'd better
stay on the stick-or else.
"We'll show up."
Translated: Oh my gracious,
15 more games yet to play
this season-and why didn't I
take that job washing down
ceilings and forget this Whole
nonsensical business?
And, actually, the transla
tions are the .only things
which keep the writers from
going as stir crazy as the
coaches.
