Mt. Hood Roads
Closed by Snow
Salem - (CPD - The state
highway department has an
nounced that snow has closed
the McKenzie pass and Mt.
Hood loop highways for the
winter.
The department said that
this was the latest in 19 sea
sons that the two routes have
been able to remain open. Al
so closed by Friday's storm
is the little-used Sun Moun
tain road in the Klamath
red.

HOW A WIFE HELPED HER
ALCOHOLIC HUSBAND
Every so often a wife asks
me what on earth she can do
to help her husband, who
is d r i nking
himself to
death. She
says he does
n't seem to
realize what
he is doing to
himself, his
career, and
his children;
he just won't
dr. alvarez admit tnat he
is an alcoholic; and he has
become so extremely sensi
tive to the slightest word of
criticism that, if anything is
said, he promptly flies off
the handle. Recently, I read
James L. Free's remarkable
book, called "Just One More,"
concerning the problem drink
er, (Coward - McCann, N.Y.,
1955). He says that usually
there is nothing that a wife
can do to help her husband
while he is slipping down hill
into alcoholism and ruin. But
eventually, there may come a
time when, as in his own case,
the wife can start him back
on the road to recovery. As
he says, there was only one
way in which it could have
been done, and she had the
wisdom to take that way.
One noon, as he was getting
over an awful hangover, she
very quietly, and without al
lowing the slightest criticism
to come into her voice or
even into her eyes, told her
husband exactly what he had
done the afternoon and eve
ning before. She just describ
ed the events dispassionately,
as a newspaper r e p o r t er
might have done. She told
him how he had come home
three hours late for an im
portant business appointment.
The man was still there wait
ing for him. She described
how her husband had skid
ded the car off of the drive
way into a tree, and then into
a box hedge. She described
his falling into the hedge and
being helped out by the visi
tor who, obviously, was puz
zled. She described how her
husband had roughly repel

A Will Can B Revoked
By Destroying It
Ted, a widower, executed a
will giving half of his prop
erty to his invalid sister,
Anne, and the other half of
his property to his only child,
George. Ted took an executed.
copy of the will home with
him. He died several months
later.
The copy of the will re
tained by Ted could not be
found among his effects. Al
though the contents of Ted's
will could be proved by usmg
the copy that his lawyer re-
tamed, the court gave all of
his property to George. Anne
was denied the right to share
in the estate even though it
is quite possible that Ted still
wanted her to have one-half
of his property at his death.
Power to Revoke
Anyone making a will has
the power to revoke it by de
stroying or mutilating any
executed copy of the docu
ment. It is presumed that a
person has revoked his will
by physical destruction if an
executed copy was known to
be in his possession before his
death and cannot be found
after his death. Therefore, un
less Anne can prove that Ted
did not destroy his will, it is
presumed that he did and the
property all goes to his son
under the laws of inheritance.
The outcome of this case in
dicates the importance of
proper custody of wills.

She told of the abusive talk
he had used to her, to his
son and to the visitor. At the
dinner table, he got sick,
passed out, and had to be put
to bed. Most of this was news
to Free, because he had so
largely blacked out that he
had almost no memory of
what had happened. For the
first time he saw the picture
of his behavior in all its ugly
detail. He saw himself as he
would have seen some other
man who had made a pig
and a spectacle of himself.
Humblo and Afraid
- With this, Free surrender
ed. He knew then that liquor
had him licked; at last he was
humble; he was afraid, and he
wanted help. As he said, if
he hadn't come to this ex
tremely important moment of
surrender, he would have
gone on to end up either in
a mental hospital or skid row,
or in his grave.
At last he saw what all
alcoholics eventually must
come to see, which is that
he was the sort of man who
cannot take one drink and
then quit. Because of this,
if he was ever to stay sober,
he would have to quite entire
ly, and never touch the stuff
again. That would be his only
salvation.
In his book, Free discusses
ably all the various ways in
which an alcoholic can try to
get on the wagon and stay
there as through Alcohol
ics Anonymous, Alcoholic In
formation Centers, a stay in
a mental hospital, treatment
by physicians, or by psychi
atrists, or by clergymen, lay
therapists or an out-patient
clinic.

document. The document
need not be a will but it must
be executed with the formali
ties required for a will and
must indicate that the person
executing the document in
tends to have it operate as a
revoking instrumentality.
In addition to the means
available to a person for re
voking his will, the law pro
vides that a will is automat
ically revoked if certain
events occur. For instance,
Oregon statutes provide, that
a will is revoked by the mar
riage or divorce of the person
making the will. Therefore,
soldiers and' others who ex
ecuted wills while young and
have since married are with
out a will, in effect, and their
wives will take her ordinary
share under the laws govern
ing distribution of estates
when no Will exists.
Wife Must Share
If there are no children,
the wife will get all of the
husband's property, and if
there are children she must
share the property with them.
If a "newly-wed wants to pro
vide for his mother or father,
he has to execute a will after
his marriage. Divorce, of
course will not only revoke
the will of both parties to the
marriage, but will also elim
inate the possibility of inher
itance as between the parties
to the divorce unless a subse
quent will is executed.

tive Interim Committee on
Labor-Management Relations
has launched a hearing here
involving the use of non
union workmen by employers
engaged in a labor-management
dispute.
The hearing room was pack
ed with people and the crowd
overflowed into the halls.
The first witness was
George Brown, political edu
cation director of the Oregon
AFL-CIO.
"We will submit to you,"
he said, "that professional
strike-breakers are now in
use in the Portland newspaper
strike."
Brown said it was the feel
ing of labor officials that an
employer should not be per
mitted to "bring in strike
breakers from out of the
state."
At the same time, Brown
said, Labor "realized the right
of an employer to continue
operations during a strike if
possible, but not with the use
of persons hired specifically
for the breaking of a strike."
He declared that the use of
strike - breakers "can only
lead to a break-down in nego
tiations."

Classroom Needs
Salem (UPD The Legisla
tive Interim Committee on
Education has been told
that 583 classrooms are sched
uled for completion in Ore
gon during the 1959-60 school
year, but 742 additional class
room will be needed by next
September.
D. D. Williams, director of
schoolhouse planning for the
state department of education,
said the additional classrooms-
are needed for more students
who are anticipated, to re
place unsatisfactory facilities
and to reduce excessive class
room loads.
