Who should be boss? Social scientists
have found that a dominant (but not too
domineering) husband generally pro
duces a better-adjusted family than
one in which the wife is boss. But the
tendency, in American life is toward
marriages in which both parents share
the burden of decisions. In these deci
sions, each member of the family can
participate when it's appropriate. When
a child takes part, it increases his secur
ity and feeling of belonging.
Between marriage partners, there
should be an interdependence and a cer
tain amount of independence. While it's
good for them to share interests, each
should respect the other's preference. If
a husband likes golf, his wife bridge,
and their son basketball, there still can
be unity without uniformity. "Togeth
erness" can be overdone. Each person
ality adult or child should be permit
ted to develop and flourish.
One way to find the right answers to
sound family living is to leam how
to talk things over. This is the art of
communication, through which you get
others to understand your thinking. In
talking things over, you must create an
atmosphere in which conflicts are re
solved, compromises reached. Never do
anything that makes it impossible for
your mate to "save face" and thus cut
off communication with each other.
Frequently I hear of couples who can't
seem to discuss their children's prob
lems without stirring up a fracas. Johnny
is behaving badly at school. When his
mother starts to talk it over with her
husband, he brushes her off. "That's
your department," he says. "Mine is the
office." This "I-don't-want-to-hear-about-it"
lack of cooperation usually
does not promote family harmony.
What should you expect from family
life? Home should be a place where
everyone finds a chance for emotional,
intellectual, spiritual, and social
development. There's a division of tasks
and responsibilities that helps children
understand the roles they'll play in later
life. A strong family gives each person a
sense of excitement and adventure,
pride and hope.
Family living is made up of love,
laughter, joy, and work, of agreement
and conflict, frustrations and tears. It
is never entirely easy, but the rewards
can be great. After all, our family is the
greatest force in shaping us, determin
ing the kind of people we are and the
type of citizens our children will be .
