work were told last week that
charges have been brought
against them alleging "viola
tions of a specific article of
the American Newspaper
Guild's constitution."
The returning Guildsmen
said that the Guild local in
voting to observe picket lines
of the Stereotypers Union
"and by subsequent actions in
supporting the strike when
the Guild had no dispute with
management, violated its con
tract and put in jeopardy the
gains made in . . . the past 20
years."
Letter Written
They said in a letter to the
Portland Newspaper Guild
Trial board that guildsmen
who returned to work felt
they could not in good faith
'"continue a dishonest action
even though it was led by the
Guild's officers and support
ed by a majority of the mem
bership." Robert Shults, president of
the Portland Newspaper
Guild, said the specific charge
was "failing to honor a major
ity decision of the fellow

revenue service office in the
