Formula To Find Feet
Per Second Is Given
A simple formula for chang
ing miles per hcur speed into
feet per second has been giv
en by Chief of Police Charles
P. Champlin.
The chief explained that
the danger of speed given in
miles per hour is ' rarely un
derstandable to a driver, but
speed reduced to the distance
a vehicle travels per second
becomes frightening to any
one sensible enough to realize
the difficulty of stopping.
To use the formula, add
one-half the speed the vehicle
is traveling to the speedome
ter reading. The total be
comes the feet the car is trav
eling per second.
For example, if the car's
speedometer reading is 40
miles per hour. Take one-half
of 40 and add it (20) to the
speedometer reading-the total
is 60, the number of feet the
car travels in a second when
driving 40 miles per hour.
One second' is the reaction
time between recognizing dan
ger and applying the brakes,
the chief reminded drivers.
"Too many drivers have
their first accident, and some
times their last, before they
accept the fact that they can't
stop on a dime," Champlin
said.

Jobs Plentiful
Washington -rtJPD- The , La
bor Department has reported
that employment continued to
rise in large newspaper plants
in fiscal 1959 but climbed
only half as fast as in the
newspaper industry as a
whole.
The Bureau of Employment
Security said job totals edged
upward 1.2 per cent in the
large plants, compared with a
2.5 per cent gain for the
whole industry.
The bureau said employ
ment in large commercial
printing plants also rose by
seven-tenths of 1 per cent.
The entire commercial print
ing industry had a 1.9 per cent
job increase.
Liffle Resigns

Corvallis, has announced his
resignation from the Oregon
Water Resources Board effec
tive Feb. 15.
In a letter to the governor,
Little said "as you know, I
have long been active in the
electric utility business as
manager of Consumers Power,
Inc. Since this utility now has
application pending before the
state of Oregon and the Fed
eral Power Commission for
permission to develop new
hydro capacity on the' North
Santiam river, I believe my
resignation from the State
Water Resources Board will
be to the best interest of both
the state and my employers."
Little was appointed to the
board by ex-Gov. Robert D.
Holmes. His four-year term
would have expired Aug. 28,
1961.
