Bathyscaph Goes
To Record Depth
In Pacific Ocean
San Diego -(UPD- The 75-ton,
blimp-shaped bathyscaph Tri
este has reached ocean depths
in the West Pacific never be
fore explored by man, the
Naval Electronics Laboratory
revealed today.
The Trieste plunged to a
depth of 24,000 feet, breaking
its own record of 18,600 feet
set in November in the same
location -- about 200 miles
southeast of Guam.
Under for Six Hours
The laboratory said the
craft was submerged for six
hours and 31 minutes. It was
piloted by Navy Lt. Donald
Walsh, officer in charge, and
Jacques Piecard, co-inventor
of the deep-diving vessel.
A series of dives with the
bathyscaph was expected to
continue through February,
a spokesman said, in the Mar
ianas Trench, which is be
lieved to be 37.500 feet deep.
Hopes for Facts
The Navy said it hoped to
establish facts about sunlight
penetration, underwater visi
bility, natural underwater
sounds, transmission of man
made sounds, water currents
and temperatures, sea floor
configuration and the effect
of deep water pressures on
mechanical devices.
Presumably, informa t i o n
gathered by the deep-diving
tests would be used to develop
nuclear submarines capable of
traveling at even greater
depths than at present.
