In the Day's News
By FRANK JENKINS
A this is written, steel is
still Xhe big news - followed
closely by the political impli
cations of the steel agreement,
in the reaching of which Vice
President Nixon and Secre
tary of Labor Mitchell played
an important part.
It seems certain that the
strike will not be resumed.
But problems remain. One of
them is the wage-price spiral.
Will it go on spiraling? Or can
it be checked - and maybe
leveled off?
Answers to these questions
are not yet forthcoming.
A SUGGESTION to the steel
people - on both sides:
An agreement has been
reached. The mills will go on
producing. The workers will
go on working. Steel will be
available for the making of
automobiles and all the myr
riad other things that are
made of steel. The public will
go on buying American steel
products - unless they are
priced out of the market.
Why not just accept what
has been done and give it the
old college try to see if it can
be made to work?
"JllAYBE, if they go at it with
courage and determina
tion, the steel operators can
trim out some unsound busi
ness practices. Maybe the
workers, back at work after
a long period of enforced idle
ness, can eliminate some of
their costlier work practices.
Maybe some waste on both
sides can be squeezed out, so
that American steel prices can
be kept competitive with the
prices of foreign producers.
That would be good for the
nation (and its 180 million
people). What is good for the
nation as a whole can hardly
fail to be good for the steel
people - on both sides of the
economic fence.
GENERATION or so ago,
somebody drew a famous
cartoon. It depicted two mules,
They were standing between
two shocks of hay. They were
haltered together. Every time
one mule started toward a
shock of hay, the other PULL
ED BACK. Thus pulling and
hauling against each other,
they were getting pretty hun
gry. THEN
Finally
One mule whispered in the
other mule's ear. The other
mule listened. As he listened,
the anger and frustration on
his face changed to enlighten
ed comprehension. He whis
pered back.
The upshot of it was that
they quit pulling and hauling
and WORKED TOGETHER.
Working together, they trot
ted over to one shock of hay
and polished it off. Then they
trotted over to the other hay
shock and polished it off.
Thus COOPERATING, in
stead of checkmating each
other's every move, they grow
fat and sleek.
AND
Not only were the MULES
pleased with the results of
this friendly and intelligent
cooperation. Their OWNER
was pleased because he had
better and more efficient
mules.
So they all lived happily
ever afterward.
JUST a dream, you say?
Well, dreams sometimes
come true.
