Coiners of Phrases Have
Borrowed from Nature
There are saying coined to
express every phase of human
activity; most are pretty ex
pressive and any shortage
that may exist is being added
to nearly every day. Coiners
of phrases seem to work while
the rest of us sleep.
Sometimes we classify the
sayings as "slang phrases" but
many .are classic; thinkers,
poets and the "man on the
street" have searched and
often found, a word or two
that adequately expresses a
world of meaning with a min
imum of effort. His friends
and their friends immediately
adopt it as their own and use
it to express their own
thoughts.
The number of slogans and
phrases that concern animals,
birds, fish, etc., indicates that
a great deal of "nature-love'
entered into the lives of the
people who originally coined
them.
"Watched
Actions of birds and ani
mals were watched very close
ly m hopes that tomorrow's
weather or next winter's cold
would be revealed,' when
preparations could be made.
Even today in rural America
the industrious storing of food
by squirrels or the flight of
migrating geese is looked
upon as a pretty sure indica
tion of an early or long sea
son of cold. The heaviness of
fur-bearing animals, is also
supposed to be a pretty sure
barometer.
. "There's going to be a frost
tonight conjures up in the
mind, hickory nuts loosing
their hold and rattling down
through the branches; the
juice of wHd grapes turning
sweet under the impact of
cold, and the withering of
goldenrod and other late fall
plants.
And the winter always
comes. Days of bleakness and
biting wind, while the sun is
a faint blur in the cold sky.
The farmer looks at the
dwindling hay and checks the
calendar, "Half the winter,
and half the hay"-wonders if
it is going to come out all
right. Then he has one that is
unpopular but invariably true,
which pertains to that part of
the season after the excite
ment of the holidays-"when
the days begin to lengthen,
then the cold begins to
strenghten."
"Groundhog Day" on Feb.
2 promises that the "first
robin of spring will soon
'blaze the trail' for the 'blue
bird of summer'."
The corn should be in the
ground "when the oak leaves
are the size of squirrels ears"
in order to be "knee high by
the Fourth of July."

Chicago - (Science Service)
An approach to a pharma
ceutical fountain of youth has
been achieved by administer-,
ing androgenic steroid to aged
men. A degree of restoration
of youthful function, particu
larly of the muscles, has been
observed.
Dr. Gregory Pincus, re
search director of the Worces
ter ; Foundation for Experi
mental Biology, Shrewsbury,
Mass., told the American As
sociation for the Advance
ment of Science recently that
the androgen administration
alone does not completely re
store youthful function in
elderly men but it does help
bring back some youthful at
tributes. The use of the steroid for
the treatment of the aged men
is based, upon the fact that
with advancing age the man
ufacture in the body of ster
oids declines.
Not Correctable
"There may be irreversible
age condition changes that
cannot be corrected by the
steroid treatment and there
may be other hormonal defi
cits," Dr. Pincus, suggested.
"We still . have no knowl
edge of age-related changes in
the production of other steroi
dal hormones such as proges
terone and aldosterone. Fur
thermore, the effects of the
steroidal hormones upon
other hormone producing sys
tems in the body such as the
thyroid gland and the pitui
tary gland yet remain to be
explored in elderly subjects."
Dr. Pincus declared that
the full role of the hormones
as "sustainers of youthful
metabolic function still re
mains to be determined.

American Airways has pro
posed a five-point revamping
of its service to the Far. East
which the airline said would
Allow a 20 per cent reduction
in passenger fares.
As if knowing ''that one
swallow does not make a
summer," millions of others
join and the "good old sum
mer time" becomes "vibrant
with bird songs." "Kneedeep
in June" is the pleasantest pre
dicament that any one could
possibly be in, but it doesn't
last long, for the "last rose of
summer" soon "fades away
and dies" and the "brown sear
of leaves of autumn" rattle
ominously in the "cold north
wind."
Squirrels hurry to "lay in"
the last of the oak and hickory
tree harvest; "wise birds" are
taking off in waves for the
hospitable warmth of the Deep
South."
A sharp wind with a knife-
edge of cold snatches away
the "last leaf from the tree."
Wood smoke, little . darker
than the leaden sky,-puffs up
from chimneys. Householders
look out and observe "there's
going to be a killing frost
tonight."
Let's leave it there: it is
where we came in anyway.
