AO-Acre Farm With
Cabin Cheap in 1837
New -Hope, Pa.:- Back in
1S37 you could locate on a
4u-acre farm and build a cab
in and rail fence for a total
outlay of $250 in the now
booming Bucks county.
It was right there in nrint
I in an old newspaper, William
tfudlig dug out of his grand
l father's attic.
Celery Seized Because
Of Too Much Pesticide
Washington -(UPD- The head
of the food and drug adminis
tration said his agency has
recently seized "a number of
shipments" of celery produced
by a grower who used too
much pesticide on his crop.
Commissioner G e o r g e P.
Larrick did not identify the
grower except to say that "he
has some large plots of celery
now inside the state of Flor
ida." He said the grower "will
not dare" ship them unless
"he removes this material that
it not supposed to be there."
Larrick said his agency had
another case in which a let
tuce grower left too much
pesticide on his crops "and
we're seizing them through
the federal courts."
Case Cited
The commissioner cited the
cases in an effort to show that
some producers refuse, or fail,
to follow directions given by
manufacturers or the govern
ment for use of pesticides,
some of which have caused
cancer in animals.
He said on a radio program
(Radio News Conference-NES
Associates, Inc.) that the gov
ernment normally tries to
cope with such problems
through educational programs
"by letting people know
what's expected of them."
But he said if that doesn't
work, it can institute seizure
or bring criminal prosecutions
and "we expect to use all of
those."
Program Not Enough
Larrick refused to say that
the educational approach had
been a failure. But he said it
will not solve the problem by
itself. As in the case of peni
cillin in milk, he said "we
have issued instructions to
our field force" to test routine
samples.
Larrick quickly added that
GLUE CLOGS HIGHWAY
Radford, Va. -0IPI)- U. S.
Highway 11 was clogged Tues
day when a truck carrying
3,000 gallons of furniture glue
overturned on a curve near
here. Workmen shoveled the
glue off the road so that traf
fic could resume.

he did not want "to indict
milk generally because milk
is a very wholesome food,"
and "we want to solve this
problem before it becomes a
really important problem."
In discussing his agency's
recent action against cran
berries, caponettes, milk, and
some other foods, Larrick said
the government was forced to
move because "no man alive
today' knows how to get a safe
tolerance for a chemical that
causes cancer when ingested
by laboratory animals."
