As a photographer who specializes in pets like the
. dachshund on Family Weekly's cover, I some
times tell myself, "I've seen just about everything
when it comes to dogs." Then comes a dog I've never
seen before nor even heard of. Not that they're new
to the world: the saluki, pictured here with other
rare breeds, was so loved by ancient Sumerians that
they carved its picture on their walls some thou
sands of years ago. But in our, country, at least,
they're as rare as a dog lover without hair on his
tweeds and, as a pet photographer, I have seen
just about everything when it comes to dog lovers.

1. Schipperke, from Belgium, is a
smaller cousin of the Belgian sheep
dog. A fine household pet, his name
in Flemish means "little captain."
2. Kuvasz. A Hungarian sheep dog that
came originally from Tibet via the
Middle East. Until shepherds acquired
them, kuvaszes were the exclusive pets
.and watchdogs of Hungarian kings.
3. Saluki. These keen-sighted and
swift hounds are considered the oldest
breed of domestic dog, strongly resem
bling 8,000-year-old Persian carvings.
4. Lhasa Apsos. Another breed from Ti
bet, his heavy coat of fur helps keep
him warm in the frigid Himalayas.
5. Basenji. About the size of a fox
terrier, the basenji came to Egypt
from Central Africa. A voiceless dog,
his bite is worse than his bark.
