Assault Charges
Filed After Fire
Salem. - (UPD - A citizen's
arrest late Friday at the scene
of a house fire in South Sa
lem resulted in a charge of
assault and battery against
William Butte, 37.
The incident involved minor
injuries to a fireman, Fred
Fagg, of the Salem Heights
Liberty Fire district and the
citizen who filed the com
plaint was Fireman Carl
Brown.
Butte posted $500 cash bail
in Woodburn justice court.
The complaint charged that
Fagg was struck by Butte in
the face. The blaze caused
about $300 damage.
Incorporation Papers
Filed for Coos Firm
Salem - (UPD - Articles of in

for Elfving's Inc., Coos Bay.
They were signed by Karl G.

timura air base at Ambon, in
which he employed bombs
and machinegun fire, was his
only battle mission.
"I attacked no other ob
jects, harbors or ships," he
said.
Plane Shot Down
Pope has been held by the
government ever since May,
when his airplane was down
ed by anti-aircraft fire.
His trial began with four
formal charges lodged against
him: illegal possession of fire
arms and explosives, man
slaughter, participating in an
armed rebellion against the
government, and assisting the
enemy in time of war.
Carries Death Penally
The last accusation carries
a maximum penalty of death.
His admission to the Ambon
raid was made under cross
examination by Judge Sard
jono, who earlier overruled a
defense motion that would
have given . Pope the same
status as a prisoner of war
under the Geneva convention,
relieving him of the threat of
execution.
Pope was asked by the judge
Saturday to enter a plea of
guilty or innocent but refused
to do either.
'T understand under Indo
nesian laws, a prisoner is not
compelled to plead either
guilty or not guilty," he said.
Diary Produced
Judge Sardjono produced a
small diary belonging to Pope
which told of several attacks
and claims of destruction.
Pope affirmed that the diary
was his but said the battle ac
counts it contained were
"those of other fliers flying
for the rebels which I jotted
down for comparing with the
radio broadcasts by the gov
ernment radio and the rebel
radio and occasional news
papers from the Philippines."

Real Issues of '60
"These are among the real
issues of 1960. And it is on
the basis of these issues that
the American people must
make their fateful choice for
their future.
"In the past 40 months, I
have toured every state in the
union and I have talked to
Democrats in all walks of
life. My candidacy is there
fore based on the conviction
that I can win both the nomi
nation and the election.
"I believe that any Demo
cratic aspirant to this impor
tant nomination should be
willing to submit to the voters
his views, record and compe
tence in a series of primary
contests. I am therefore an
nouncing my intention of fil
ing in the New Hampshire
primary and I shall announce
my plans with respect to the
other primaries as their filing
dates approach.
'Historic Function'
"I believe that the Demo
cratic party has a historic
function to perform in the
winning of the 1960 election,
comparable to its role in 1932.
I intend to do my utmost to
see that that victory is won.
"For 18 years, I have been
in the services of the United
States, first as a naval officer
in the Pacific during World
War II and for the past 14
years as a member of the Con
gress. In the last 20 years, I
have traveled in nearly every
continent and country from
Leningrad to Saigon, from
Bucharest to Lima. From all
of this, I have developed an
image of America as fulfilling
a noble and historic role as
the defender of freedom in a
time of maximum peril - and
of the American people as
confident, courageous and
persevering.
"It is with this image that
I begin this campaign."

year will be discussed during
a Phoenix Community club
meeting starting at 7:30 p.m.
Monday in the Phoenix Com
munity club building, accord
ing to Allen Harris, club pres
ident. The public is invited.
Heading the agenda is a pro

dance every Saturday night in

and his orchestra would pro
vide the music. The refresh
ment concession is still open
to any interested organization,
Harris pointed out.
Chaperones Needed
Chaperones are still needed
for the Phoenix grade school
dance scheduled for Friday
night, Harris said. This is the
first of a possible series of
youth activities for the new
year.
"Those people who are de
manding more youth activi
ties for the club can best show
their interest by donating
their services as chaperones,"
Harris said.
Election Slated
A nominating committee
will be selected, also, for con
sidering officers for the new
year, Harris said.
"The club still needs a lot
of maintenance done, so we
will need to organize a work
party for a week end project
or two," Harris said.
