Williams, 22, Junction City,
was freed of a charge of burg
lary not in a dwelling Monday
when John B. Fenner, Benton
county district attorney, ex
plained that the only witness
in the case had died. District
Judge Robert Gilliland dis-
missed the charge.
Larue B. Garrick, 22, who
was shot inside the Monroe
tavern Dec. 23, died on Dec.
28. He had told sheriff! dep
uties that Williams was with
him at the time of the burg
lary. Williams had admitted
being with Garrick earlier in
the evening but denied being
with him at the time of the
burglary-
Fenner said the case would
be presented to a grand jury
to determine if further action
was warranted.
Oregon Payroll
Taxes To Go Up
Salem -UP&- As of Friday
the first of the year-Oregon
payroll taxes will go up and
employers of only one person
will come under the state un
employment c o m p e nsatian
law.
Hie 1959 Legislature made
the changes m the law.
Employers pay payroll
taxes now on the first $3,600
of emolovee income but after
Jan. 1 the first $3,800 of in
come will apply.
The unemployment trust
fund is expected to be in-
- creased by aoout $i mimon
r vear bv the change. Also.
10,000 employers will come
under the unemployment pay
system with the advent of the
one-employee statute.
Burglars Ransack
Home in Portland
Portland-OIPB-Two burglars
wearing white masks broke
into the home of Mr. and Mrs.
John Noce here Tuesday night
and made off with an undeter
mined amount of loot after
locking the pair in a bath
room. -
Noce, a clothier, and his
wife returned home and dis
covered the burglars. The
yeggs first removed a $2,000
diamond ring from Noce's
hand. His wife hid her rings
in a oowder jar and thermos
while the burglars worked.
A safe was broken open
and papers valuable only to
Noce were taken. Police said
the burglars apparently en
tered the bouse by scaling a
lattice work up the side of the
structure.
Taken, besides the ring,
was a 12-place silver setting
valued at $1,000. The house
was ransacked from top to
bottom.
New York Transit
Lines Face Strike

subway and bus riders de
pended today on a narrowing
gap between transit negotia
tors to forestall a citywiae
New Year's day strike.
Both sides took a cautious
step towards settlement Tues
day, but the threat of a para
1 y z i n g walkout was not
averted.
The City Transit Authority
made its first offer to the
Transport Workers Union of
a 9V4-cent an hour, two-year
contract package which would
cost $12,500,000.
The union lowered its de
mands from a $75 million
package to $30 million. It
termed the transit authority
offer "operation eyedropper,"
and rejected it.
Aliens Must
Report Addresses
Portland -0JP&- Some 20,000
aliens in Oregon must report
their addresses to the Federal
Immigration and Naturaliza
tion Service in January, ac
cording to the service.
The alien address law re
quires that all aliens must re
port each January, except for
diplomats, those accredited to
certain international organi
zations and those in the coun
try temporarily as migratory
workers.

Elmo George McReynolds, a
local sports figure for many
years. McReynolds died Sun
day at his Alsea river cabin
, of a heart attack.
McReynolds managed Al
bany in the one-time State
baseball league for several
years and during World War
II was' chief of the Civilian
Guard at Camp Adair.
