Oyer $1 Billion
Spent Annually
On Teeth Care

spend more than
a billion dollars caring for
their teeth, but only a frac
tion of that in research to pre
vent tooth decay and mouth
ailments, a Harvard profes
sor said recently.
Dr. Reidmar T. Sognnaes,
writing In the current issue of
Science magazine on the first
100 years of dentistry as a
profession, said, "We have
seen as much progress as one
could ask for in return for
our limited investment in
dental science."
Dr. Sognnaes, in his article,
"Dentistry at the Crossroads,"
reported Americans spend
SI .6 billion annually on den
tal care about one sixth of
the nation's total expenditure
on health. .
Small Percentage
But, he said, only a small
percentage of the money is
invested in basic dental re
search. - He said most of the nation's
47 dental schools were in a
position to conduct research
but were financially limited.
Dr. Sognnaes, acting dean of
the Harvard School of Dental
Medicine, said the total en
dowment of the 27 privately
supported dental schools was
less than ten million dollars.
Program Outlined
Looking ahead to the next
century. Dr. Sognnaes out
lined a three pronged attack
against dental diseases which
included federal support for
training dental researchers;
long-term research for dental
scientists, and collaboration
with research scientists in
other fields.
"Ultimately," Dr. Sognnaes
aid, "this three pronged ap
proach will elevate the whole
trend of teaching, research
and service for dental health."
Leukemia Virus in
Mice Isolated

A virus has been isolated from
m mouse with leukemia that
will produce different tumors
in mice and hamsters. -
When young mice, rats and
hamsters were inoculated, the
virus produced heart, lung
and kidney sarcomas, and
mammary tumors as well as
lesions, a team of British sci
entists reports here in the
British'Medical Journal.
The virus, which is . now
being studied by electron mi
croscopy, is similar to one
isolated earlier by other re
searchers, roport Drs. G. Ne
groni, R. Dourmashkin and F.
C. Chesterman of the Imperial
Cancer Research Fund. ,
Although cell-free extracts
of hamster tumors are appar
ently not infective for new
born or adult hamsters, some
virus must be present in these
tumors. The researchers ex
plain that these extracts in
jure mouse embryo cells, and
cell-free cultures from these
embryo cells will again pro
duce bloody lesions and tu
mors in hamsters.
The researchers are at
tempting to relate infectivity
of the cultures with the num
ber and type of particles seen
in an electron microscope.
U.S. Cows Content,
But Also Hungry

America's cows may be
contented, but they are also
hungry, researchers at the
New York State College of
Engineering, Cornell univer
sity here, believe.
Profs. J. K. Loosli and R.
G. Warner have found that the

to five pounds more milk a
day if her daily menu includes
20 pounds of good grain. Most
daiimen give their cows less
than 15 pounds a day.
Many cows brought to the
university in average condi
tion, the scientists report, give
1,000 to 3,000 pounds more
milk a year when their feed
is increased.

Keene, NJI.-The hot check
artist who clipped a merchant
here was really an artist.
A Keene grocer sold cold
cuts to a man who handed
him a check which had appar
ently been stamped with a
check protector machine.
A closer and too late look
showed the red and black
printing of the firm's name,
and the stamped amount of
the check, were drawn in by
an artistic hand. .
The artist also painstaking
ly produced, with a pin, the
tiny holes with which a check
protector machine pierces a
check, -
