Spanish Girl
Makes Ike Late
For Breakfast
Madrid, Spain (UPD Presi
dent Eisenhower kept a blind
date' with a little Spanish miss
today which made him late for
breakfast with Generalissimo
Francisco Franco.
The date was 7-year-old
Rosa Maria Jimenez Calvo,
who planted a kiss smack on
Eisenhower's lips in a burst of
affection. The President
blushed noticeably.
It all began last Sept. 8
when tiny dark-eyed Rosita
wrote to President "Esinya
guer" which is how his name
sounded to her and asked to
see him when he visited
Spain. i
U. S. Ambassador John Da
vis Lodge learned of the let
ter from the little girl, who
referred to Eisenhower as
"the good-looking grandpa."
Wails At Stairway
Lodge arranged for the
meeting this morning as Ei
senhower left the palace
where he spent the night to
drive to El Pardo palace for
breakfast with Generalissimo
Francisco Franco.
Rosa, scrubbed to shining
cleanliness, and wearing a
prim blue 'dress and white
stockings, was waiting at the
bottom of the broad stairway
of Moncloa Palace at 7:40 a.m.
when the 1 president came
down.
Lodge and Rosa's parents,
Mario and Ann Jiminez, were
with her.
The President, natty in a
freshly-pressed gray business
suit and carrying his topcoat
over one arm, smiled broadly
when Lodge introduced Rosa.
The President posed for
pictures with the child, telling
her "let's wait until the pic
tures are over and we can
talk."
Gives Hat a Doll .
Then he led her to a chair
and sat down, but she decid
ed she'd stand. Placing a
hand affectionately on her
shoulder, Eisenhower asked if
she liked dolls.
She whispered back "Si."
An aide handed Eisenhower
a long box in Christmas holi
day wrapping. The box was as
big as Rosa, herself.
"That will be your doll,"
Eisenhower said.
Whereupon Rosa clutched
at the shoulder of his coat and
kissed him smack on the lips.
Christmas Event
Set in Eagle Point
Eagle Point The Eagle
Point Lions club will hold
an "Old-Fashioned Christmas
tree" in front of the city li
brary at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday,
club officials have announced.
Music will be provided for
carol singing, and Santa Claus
will be present to give candy
to children around the Christ
mas tree on the library lawn.
The club sponsors the event
annually for children of the
Eagle Point area, and all chil
dren and parents are invited.
