Facts on Christmas Trees-and Greenery
Br Science Service
In popularity of Christmas
trees, Douglas-fir is the win
ner. It leads all others as the
favorite tree of Americans, ac
cording to the most recent
statistics of the U.S. Forest
Service.
Next in line is balsam fir,
then eastern redcedar. Black
spruce ranks fourth, and most
of the smaller trees on the
market are of this variety.
Scotch pine comes next. These
five make up 81 per cent of
the crop. White spruce, red
pine, Norway spruce and
white fir add another 10 per
cent. .
Bubbling Tree
Ornaments Not
Meant To Drink
Washington (Science Serv
ice) Christmas tree orna
ments that bubble can ruin a
happy holiday.
The bubbling fluid is poison
ous methylene chloride, a
compound that has the same
depressing effects on the cen
tral nervous system as some
anesthetics. Each decoration
contains three to four milli
liters of the liquid - the lethal
dose is estimated at between
one-half to- five milliliters for
very two pounds of body
weight Thus drinking the
liquid from a dozen or so orna
ments could mean svious ill
ness, if not death, for a small
child. -Should
Empty Stomach
Inhaling the fumes of spill
ad liquids from broken decor
ations could also depress the
central nervous system, the

formation Center, Tucson, re
ports. If a child does drink
the fluid, his stomach should
be emptied as soon as possible
and the doctor called.
The "snow" that you spray
on may be toxic if you breathe
in the mixture during the
spraying process. Methylene
-chloride - aadjreon, .are both
used as propellants for the
white particles that make up
the snow. Treatment consists
mainly of removing the vic
tim to fresh air.
The metallic salts common
ly used to produce colorful
effects when thrown into a
blazing fire are another
Christmas-time hazard. Salts
of arsenic, lead, antimony,
copper and barium are among
thoae burned. If these com
pounds are eaten, vomiting
should be induced or the
stomach "washed out." Milk
or olive oil, soothing to irri
tated tissues, should be given.
Barries Dangerous
When it comes to the mistle
toe and holly, there are con
flicting reports of toxicity.
Soma researchers report
nausea and mild narcosis as a
result of eating holly. Several
deaths of small children have
been attributed to eating the
whit mistletoe berries, yet
other researchers report no
toxic symptoms in pigs that
were fed both berries and
mistletoe leaves.
Generally, the suggested
treatment in case any of these
plants are eaten is to get rid
of it by inducing vomiting in
the victim and to call the
doctor.
Red spruce, white pines
(eastern and western), Virgin
ia pine, southern pine, lodge
pole pine, Norway pine and
pinyon pine are about equal
in popularity, each type con
tributing one per cent to. the
total.
Seven other varieties make
up less than two per cent of
the crop: red fir (Shasta and
California), Jack pine, blue
spruce, Engelmann spruce, Al
pine fir, noble fir and jum
pers. Blunt-Pointed Needles
What kind of tree you buy
for decorating can be told by
the needles and branches
Firs have soft, blunt-pointed
needles that are slightly
cifrved, and their cones sit up
right on the branches, like
short fat candles. Spruces
have short, sharp-pointed,
prickly needles. Spruce cones
are small and hang downward
from the branches. You can
tell Douglas-firs by their cones
that have a little three
pronged projection, found on
neither firs nor spruces. Pine
needles come in bundles of
two or more, joined at the base
by a thin paper-like tissue.
There are five needles in a
bundle on white pines. Red-
cedar and arbor vitae have
berries instead of cones.
Choose and Cut Plan
In some places you can get
a Christmas tree on a "choose
and cut" plan. This plan is
being promoted in California
where the seeker of a tree
drives out to a Christmas tree
farm, parks, is handed a saw
and invited for a fixed fee to
select and cut his own. In a
New Jersey operation, the
grower does the cutting for
the customer but allows the
purchaser to select the tree
he wants.
Eight out of ten families on
the average buy Christmas
trees, judging from a survey in
Indiana. Cut evergreens were
selected by 90 per cent. Most
families had bought their trees
by Dec. 20, but about eight
per cent waited until a day or
so before Christmas. Only a
quarter of the buyers could
identify the species of tree
they bought. Most trees pur
chased were between four and
seven feet high. iLrsu. !...
Another study in Ohio indi
cated that the geographic area
in which a person was raised
is apparently a factor influen
cing his preference for a par
ticular kind of tree.
Fire Hazards
Christmas trees can be fire
hazards. Flammability tests
performed three years ago at
Cornell university by Profs. L.
S. Hamilton and A. M. S. Prid
ham showed that red or Nor
way pine is the safest of five
Christmas . trees tested; - it
burns the least and the slow
est. White pine burns most
and fastest.
Samples were tested when
the trees were fresh and after
they had stood without water
for 14 days in a-heated room.
The whole tree was burned at
the end of 14 days. Red pine
Motel Burglary Was
An Inside Job
Salisbury, Vt - Police fig
ured it must be an inside job.
Mrs. Charlotte B y e r s of
New York City reported $60
stolen from her motel room.
Her son, Samuel, who had
seen the thief, gave police the
description:
About 30 years old, six feet
tall and dressed only in ma
roon pajama pants.

lasted twice as long as the
Douglas fir, Norway spruce,
and balsam fir. The Scotch
pine burned nearly three
times faster than red pine, and
white pine burned about five
times faster.
Some artificial trees have
needles made of synthetic
materials that will not burn.
Cut Butt Slantwise
When you get a Christmas
tree home, throw cold water
over it. Then cut off the butt
end about an inch slantwise.
This will open the pores of the
wood to water. -Set the tree in
water and keep it cool and
shaded until you take it in
doors for trimming. A can or
pail will do to hold the water
in which the tree is placed.
But various kinds of metal
Christmas tree holders have
receptacles in them for water.
A tree as tall as a man will
use as much as a cup of water
a day. .
Mistletoe lives on tree
branches, getting its minerals
and mostiure for growth from
its host. Yet the term "para
site" is not considered exactly
accurate as it manufactures its
own food in its green leaves.
But holly commercially to
prevent depletion of this
this woodland resource. In
Florida where American holly
grows, the plant is protected
by state law. If maurauders
strip the woods of the female
trees bearing bright red ber
ies, only the male trees ' will
be left and they cannot repro
duce themselves. Holly grow
ing is a commercial activity
and most of this Christmas
greenery you buy will be of
this sort.
