Cells Cited as Missing Link in Arthritis Factor

An important missing link in
the puzzle of rhumatoid
arthritis has been established
with the pinpointing of the
cells that produce the "rhum
atoid factor," a myterious
substance found in the blood
. of arthritics.
The discovery furnishes
medical investigators with a
new lead to the study of
rheumatoid arthritis and may
even provide physicians with
a new technique for diagnos
ing the nation's number one
crippling disease.
The rheumatoid factor had
previously been identified,
isolated and purified, but its
origin had been unknown,
the American Rheumatism
Association meeting here was
told.
Formation Traced
A research team, headed
by Dr. Robert C. Mellors of
New York's Hospital for Spe
cial Surgery, Philip D. Wil
son Research Foundation, has
now traced the site of forma
tion of the factor to two kinds
of cells found in the body
tissues of patients suffering
from the disease.
These cells are the plasma
cells present in the synovial
membrane that lines the
joints and the '"large pale
cells" of germinal centers of
lymph nodes. '
Dr. Mellor pointed out' that
inflammation of synovial
membrane and subsequent
swelling of the joints are.
early pathological changes
that characterize the disease,
and it is in such membrane
that the plasma cells are
found. Swollen lymph nodes,
also characteristic of rheum
atoid arthritis, contain the
"large pale cells."
It is known that both of
these cells produce immune
bodies or anibodies-one of
the body's defenses against
infectious disease.
. The significance of Dr. Mel-
lor's investigation lies in the
fact that the rheumatoid fac
tor behaves in certain re
spects like an antibody and
that it is formed by cells that
produce antibodies.
What remains to be clari
fied is whether the rheuma
toid factor is in Tact an anti
body and, if so, which agents
or materials cause the two
types of cells to produce the
factor in the first place. Many
researchers suspect the
rheumatoid factor in several
antibodies.
If the rheumatoid factor
has a protective purpose, then
Dr. Mellor's study might pro
vide a new lead in the search
for the agent that is ultimate
ly responsible for rheumatoid
arthritis. If the factor has no
antibody purpose, then its
formation must be viewed as
some sort of "metabolic er
ror," he said.
One-Dish Meal
New York -WD- Aromatic
acorn squash makes a one
dish meal. Cut 1 medium-sized
squash in half lengthwise.
Remove seeds and brush the
inside and outside with 2 ta
blespoons of melted butter.
Combine one 4',2-ounce can
of deviled ham and 2 cups of
soft bread crumbs and 2 ta
blespoons of chopped onion.
Fill squash cavities with
stuffing, sprinkle with bread
crumbs and drizzle with melt
ed butter. Bake about. 1 hour
in a 350-dcgree oven. Serves
4.
FBI Seeking Man
For Bail Jumping
The federal bureau of In
vestigation is seeking Eld
ridge Solomon Price on a
charge of bail jumping, ac
cording, to Joseph E. Thorn
ton, special agent in charge,
Portland FBI office.
Price, who is considered
armed and dangerous, is said
to be using a number of alias
es, the most frequent being
a last name of Winn or Wynn.
He is described as white,
67 years old, about 5 feet, 9
inches tall, stocky, with white
or gray hahy and he some
times wears a goatee and
close-cropped mustache.
A warrant for his arrest
was issued at Atlanta, Ga.
Anyone having information
concerning Price is request
ed to bring it to the atten
tion of the FBI, Portland, immediately.

James Jr.: Died at aee 17
in 1917. Shot to death while I
committing a robbery.
John: Died in 1927 in a
prohibition era shooting brawl
said to have resulted from a
battle over disputed beer ter
ritory with Al Capone.
Joseph: Died in 1929, shot
to death by a suburban tavern
owner while running beer.
Edward: Disappeared in
the 1920s. One story is that he
disappeared after a feud with
the Capone gang. Another
story has it that he died in
bed.
Roger: Died Wednesday
night. Shotgunned to death at
age 61 less than a month after
being paroled from prison.
Tom: The lone surviving
member of the Touhy broth
ers. Living in Arizona and
suffering from Parkinson's
Disease. Tom was in jail once
served 4 years for an Indi
anapolis, Ind., robbery.
Nike-Zeus Rocket
Test Unsuccessful
Washington-d'PD-The Army
has failed again to test suc
cessfully its Nike-Zeus rocket,
designed as this country's ma
jor defense against Russian
ballistic missiles.
The Army launched the
mighty anti-missile Wednes
day at the White Sands, N.M.,
proving grounds. The second
stage did not fire.
Two previous firings of the
two-stage rocket also were
less than full successes.

cessfully separate. But it
said the sustainer motor of
the upper rocket did not ignite.
