Titter prayers of thanks for food sent by Americans through
CARE. Goal of the holiday-season CARE Food Crusade is to
end 4 million packages of U.S. farm foods and other staples,
at $1 per package; to orphans, refugees and other needy
people in 15 countries. Contributions may be sent to CARE

Altitude Major
Concern During
Speed Flight
Washington (UPD A boyish
looking Air Force pilot told
Wednesday how it feels to fly
a plane faster than any other
living human.
Your big worry is altitude,
not speed, when you flash
across a California desert at
1,520.9 miles an hour to; set a
new world record.
Major Concern
Maj. Joseph W. Rogers, 35,
Worthington, Ohio, said this
was his major concern as he
flashed through the skies
above Edwards Air Force
Base in a F106 Delta Dart jet
Tuesday morning.
Rogers and four other re
cent record-setting Air Force
officers appeared together at
the Pentagon to receive the
Distinguished Flying Cross for
their exploits. In April, 1956,
Capt. Milburn G. Apt flew the
purely experimental X2 at an
unofficial speed of 2,148 miles
an hour but the flight ended
in a tragic crash killing Apt.

Horse races were held at
Epsom Downs in England as
early as 1730, or 50 years be
fore the first Derby was run.

Obey traffic signals and
signs, cross at intersections
only, look left and right for
traffic while crossing, .and
watch for turning cars before
crossing.
Never walk into the street
from between parked cars,
and on busy streets, enter and
leave cars only , on the curb
side. If it is necessary to walk
on the road, walk on the left
side facing traffic, he advised.
Stand on the sidewalk, not the
street, while waiting for the
opportunity to cross a street,
he said., "

missile, traveled several hun-

A Polaris missile, which
will be loaded aboard nuclear
submarines when it becomes
operational sometime late in
1960, suffered trouble in its
second stage, after a perfect
launch Tuesday night. Appar
ently the second stage cut off f
too quickly, authorities said.

said today.
Sam Johnson, 42, was in
toxicated on wine and bleach-1
ing fluid when he began indis-1
criminately firing his .22-cali-
ber rifle while riding his
horse near this village on the
Navajo Indian reservation, ac
cording to Navajo police and
FBI agents.
Johnson surrendered short
ly after the Tuesday night
shooting and was taken from I
the reservation in northeast
ern Arizona to Prescott in
central Arizoua where he was
arraigned on three counts of
suspicion of murder. i
The woman wounded was
Lucy Sage who was flown to
Albuquerque, N.M., for treat
ment. Those killed were iden-1
tified as Helen Young, 60,
Rose Henry, 22, and Grace
Long, 22.
Sisters Together
After 50 Years

met here Wednesday to spend
their first Christmas together
in 50 years.
The youngest, Mrs. Lorene
Stevens, 80, arrived at Port
land International Airport
from Kansas City, Mo., to
visit her sister, Mrs. Cora
Hall, 82.
The other sister, Mrs. Kate
Rais, 88, Billings, Mont., ar
rived earlier.
Their last Christmas to
gether was in 1909 in Mo
berly, Mo.
Their grandfather, the Rev.
J. B. Lichtenthaler, was an
Oregon pioneer who settled
here in 1851.
