    St. Mary's
Entertains
Phoenix
St. Mary's and Phoenix,
with contrasting perform
ances against a common rival,
in early season tussles, will be
basketball foes on Friday
night on the floor of the Med
ford parochial school's gym.
Only comparison possible
of the two aggregations is
from their respective games
with Riddle. St. Mary's tipped
the Irish 39 to 34 in its season
opener last week while Riddle
thumped Phoenix 56 to 34.
These results are not expected
to mean much when the two
clubs get together.
The Class B Crusaders en
ter the tussle with victories
in their only two full games
this season. They downed
Eagle Point, an A-2 rival of
Phoenix, in addition to beat
ing Riddle. The Pirates have
a 2-1 mark with nods over
Pleasant Hill and Brookings.
Good news this week for St.
Mary's is that letterman Ron
Daley may be able to play.
An October 31 football injury
sidelined him for the last of
the football campaign and the
opening of basketball activ
ity. There is some possibility
of Daley starting. Coach Bill
McKibbin said that the open
ing unit could be Dick and
Bob Evans, Al Yates and
Roger Hout and Jim Calhoun
or Daley.
Phoenix could open with
Mike Consbruck, Gerald Slo
per, Ron Baker, Jim Floyd
and Mike Reese.
Phoenix will meet Brook
ings Saturday in a return
game ' at Phoenix while St.
Mary's entertains Sacred
Heart of Klamath Falls on
Sunday afternoon.
Friday game time is 8 p.m.
There will be a preliminary
between freshmen teams.
New York - OiPD - Bobby
Jones and Francis Ouimet,
two great golfers of yester

award dinner here, Jan. zt.
Jones will receive a trophy
commemorating the 30th an
niversary of his unprecedent
ed "grand slam" in-1930, and
Ouimet will be similarly hon
ored for making golf a popu
lar sport in this country by
defeating Britain's famed

The slugging Chicago Cubs'

Banks' .985 fielding aver

Closest one to Banks In the
