Cora J. - I want to help our
daughter.
Stephen J. - I warned her
not to come to me if she got
married.
Cora J. - My husband and I
are having a serious disagree
ment about our 18 -year -old
daughter, who was married
last year against our wishes.
Miriam's husband is only 19
and they are expecting a baby
in a few months. They need
money desperately and we can
afford to give it to them. But
my husband warned Miriam
before she married that if she
eloped with this boy she
couldn't look to him for help.
The children now live in a
misesable apartment and
Miriam is wearing hand-me-down
maternity clothes. Her
husband is so badly dressed
that I'm ashamed to have
them visit us. I feel so sorry
for them it really breaks my
heart. I certainly can't enjoy
life when I know my daughter
is suffering.
Stephen J. - I realize this
may be hurting us even more
than it does them, but I think
it's the right thing to do. I
have always been a man who
stands by his word.
When I told Miriam she
,,!Hn't inoir to me for help,
she said she would sooner go
begging. I think sne ana n--'
husband should learn that
words and actions have con
sequences. You can't just go
through life doing exactly
what you please and get oft
the hook every time the chips
are down.
Aside from that, it seems to
me that it's the place of my
son-in-law's parents to make
some overtures of help. They
are no worse off than we are
and they didn't do very much
to discourage the marriage. I
always had the feeling t -y
believed we'd come through
with help.
The Council: It is always a
mistake to make rash threats
or promises before a marriage.
If the parents do not approve,
it is enough to tell the young
couple so in no uncertain
terms. It is also wise to warn
them that the financial and
emotional responsib i 1 i 1 1 e s
they are about to undertake
are by no means small. If this
kind of persuasion doesn t
take, it is unlikely that threats
or promises will work any
better. Indeed, threats often
harden the young person in
his resolve to go his own way.
Once the threat has been
made, however, the moral is
sue may become silly as well
as complicated. If Stephen
feels that keeping his word is
more important than allevi
ating the suffering of a young
family, he must accept the
consequences of such a posi
tion. He undoubtedly feels
pained, guilty and somewhat
foolish - feelings that will
grow as time goes on.
Stephen also shows an ill
natured attitude toward his
son-in-law's family. He cer
tainly has no cause to take ex
ception to their conduct when
it is no different from his own.
If both sets of parents are
feuding at the expense of the
young couple, this is indeed
a sorry situation.
If the decision is finally
made to help the young fam
ily, it should be done in such
a way as to enable them to
keep self-respect and to avoid
undermining the young man's
initiative. It should be under
stood the subsidy is an emer
gency measure to help them
get on their own feet.
