Change of Scene
May Help Cure
Skin Eruptions
Chicago (Science Service) -A
change of scene or work
men's compensation may be
more potent in curing a skin
eruption than the best treat
ment the dermatologist can
offer.
'-.ie case histories of some
3,000 industrial workers point
to at least 30 reasons why a
patient's skin may not clear
up after the original cause is
removed, Dr. George E. Mor
ris of Tuft Medical school re
ported recently.
Recovery Slow
He told scientists attending
the American Academy of
Dermatology and Syphilology
meeting here that workmen's
compensation seems to slow
thp recovery of some patients.
They find they can receive al-
most as much money by not
working as they did while
working. Another patient had
suffered a disabling dermati
tis for two years which clear
ly quickly when he learned
that only healthy workers
would be transferred to anoth
er location.
Reasons Listed
Other reasons given by Dr.
Morris concerning why a pa
tient may fail to respond to
treatment are: ,
1. Serious nervous upset;
2. Sensitivity to chemicals,
particularly to one structural
ly related to the chemical that
caused the original eruption;
3. Vitamin deficiencies, and
4. Excessive heat or cold.
Overtreatment and the use
of certain antibiotics can also
influence the patient's re
sponse, Dr. Morris said.
Republican Wins
Iowa Election
Des Moines, Iowa -OIPB-Re-publican
John Kyi, who
staked his campaign on Pres
ident Eisenhower's "Crusade
for Peace," won the race for
congressman from Iowa's 4th
District Tuesday in a victory
over an "anti-Benson" Demo
cratic opponent.
Republican leaders immed
iately hailed the election as
an indication the GOP is on
its way to victory in 1960.
Kyi, 40, a big, husky TV
newscaster with a "self sell"
approach, buried Democrat C.
Edwin Gilmour as he captured
12 of the 14 counties in the
district and even badly dented
the Democratic industrial
stronholds.
Unoficial returns from 311
of the 313 precincts gave Kyi
28,020 votes to 25,610 for
Gilmour.
