LOG SUPPLY - Lack of rain this fall has
permitted logging to continue longer than
ever before, with many "summer shows"
till operating. As a' result, most southern
Oregon mills have been able to stockpile
more logs than in - past years, assuring
ample winter's supply. The picture above
shows part of the deck and pond at Timber
Products, Medford, which represents some
30 million board feet of saw logs.
Lumber Firms Pile
SawlogsDuringGood
Weather This Year
Lack of precipitation this
fall caused many persons to
become apprehensive about
next summer's water supply,
but local logging and lumber
firms were "making hay,'
with several summer logging
hows still in operation and
winter storage decks still un
touched.
Sawmill owners say that
even though there may be a
long wet spring, enough logs
are on hand to assure steady
operation. '
At Elk Lumber company,
where two 45-hour shifts are
' expected to run through the
winter, they are currently
running two 54-hour shifts,
with two 9-hour shifts on Sat
urdays, to keep up with woods
operations that ordinarily
would have been closed by
now, according to Vice Presi
dent and General Manager
George C. Flanagan.
Frozen Ground
Be said that logging opera
tions on summer shows have
never been carried out this
late in past years. Frozen
ground at. higher elevations
has helped bring this about,
In addition to the lack of rain
toll. According to Stewart Mc-
Hew Schedule for
Playground Made
Central Point-A new sched
ule reducing the maximum
amount of playground super
vision duty for teachers at
Jewett Elementary school has
been announced by Bill Brew
ster, principal.
The new schedule was
drawn up following an eval
uation of teacher duty by the
staff of Jewett school. The
new schedule reduces the
time a teacher spends in play
ground supervision from more
than 100 minutes daily, to 45
minutes.
There is now only one duty
assignment for each teacher
daily, and duties are changed
weekly. Teachers have found,
Brewster said, that the new
schedule allows them more
time for individual student at
tention and still provides suf
ficient playground supervision.

Queen, vice president of Ko-
gap Lumber Industries, the
firm usually starts using logs
from their deck in November,
but this year, the middle of
December, they are still add
ing to then reserve supply.
They now have the largest log
inventory on record, McQueen
said.
Elk Lumber company does
not deck its logs, but instead
bands them together in ponds,
which are full to capacity
now, Flanagan said. .
Sawlogs Stockpiled
At Timber Products com
pany over 30 million board
feet of sawlogs have been
stockpiled for winter use, and
although decks are full haul
ing is still going on with the
logs going into the pond and
directly to the mill.
When weather closes woods
operations and hauling, then
the stockpile will be used, ac
cording to Manager T. K. Oli
ver. The new 40-acre pond
decking space around its I
perimeter provides much
greater - log- storage- area,
which became necessary with
the addition of a new gang
mill at Timber Products last
year.
Oliver said the firm has
plenty of logs for the winter's
operation in spite of increased
production.
Lumber market outlook
through 1960 is generally be
lieved to be good.
Service Firms Show
Rise in Receipts
Receipts of selected service
establishments in Medford to
talled $6,655,000, according
to the preliminary census of
business.
Medford showed an increase
of $1,269,000 or 23.6 per cent
over 1954 levels, according to
Harold K. Cherry of the Port
land field office of the depart
ment of commerce.
Total receipts of these es
tablishments in Oregon were
$266 million, a 22 per cent
rise over the 1954 totals.-
Grants Pass receipts were
$2,735,000 or a 5.1 per cent
increase, and Klamath Falls
receipts were $5,560,000, a
25.2 per cent increase over
1954 levels.
Roseburg was the only
large Oregon city to show a
decrease, with $3,045,000, a
decrease of 12.6 per cent
36 Landowners Seek
Help for Woodlands
Thirty-six landowners re
questing woodlapd assistance
were contacted last month by
Jim Fisher, farm forester for
the southwest district of the
state department of forestry.
Planting done by these
landowners totaled 117 acres.
Much of the farm forestry
work at this time of year is
concerned with tree planting
and Christmas tree growing.
Air Reserve Unit
Seeking Enlistments
The 9417 - Air Reserve
squadron in Medford is now
enlisting veterans from any
branch of the military serv
ices, according to Lt. Col.
Manville Heisel, commanding
officer of the local unit.
New enlistment - periods
run from two to six years, he
said. Further information can

House Trailer Fees
Change on Jan. 1
Salem - Oregon house trail
er owners will be paying a
new schedule of fees starting
Jan. 1 when a law adopted
by the last legislature be
comes effective. The new law
establishes a flat registration
fee and a license fee based
on market value.
A $6 registration fee for
all house trailers will replace
the former $15-$25 fee. The
new license fee will be 2 per
cent of 80 per cent of the
trailer's original market val
ue. This will be reduced about
10 per cent each year for the
first iive years after sold, and
5 per cent for the next four
years. After nine years there
is no reduction.
The department of motor
vehicles is charged with col
lection of both fees. It will
distribute collected license
fees to the counties of regis
tration. This fee replaces the
property tax formerly col
lected by the counties.
All house trailers with an
over-all length of at least 12
feet and six feet high from
floor to ceiling are now re
quired to be licensed and ree-
istered whether or not they
are used on a public road.
The fee applies even if trailers
are stored. The only excep
tions are for trailers held by
dealers and for trailers per
manently fixed on land by
foundation, attached struc
tures or fixed pipe connections.
