88-Year-Old
Woman is
OSC Student
Corvallis - An 88-year-old
woman who is interested in
"keeping up with the marvel
ous changes in America" is
taking a graduate course in
home economics this fall , at
Oregon State college.
She is Mrs. Winifred Case
Knapp, now of Corvallis, who
in 1920 was the first woman
ever to receive a master's de
gree in home economics from
University of Minnesota.
The course she is taking is
"Recent Advances in Foods."
Next quarter or in the
spring, she plans to take some
advanced work in weaving.
Mrs. Knapp has a small loom
in her apartment and she
makes some of her own dress
es and jackets. She earlier'
took some classwork in weav
ing in 1953.
The foods course this fall
is just "for my own edifica
tion," she noted. "One of the
rewards of living is watching
change and progress."
- Mrs. Knapp uses a cane to
help get around the campus
but is regularly among the
first students to arrive in the
classroom each Monday, Wed
nesday and Saturday at 9 a.m.
OSC's school of home ec
onomics is observing its 70th
anniversary . this fall. Inter
estingly enough, the differ
ence in age-between Mrs.
Knapp and of the 18-year-old
freshmen coeds who walk the
halls with her is that 70 years.
A widow, Mrs. Knapp lives
alone in a small apartment
near the campus. She chooses
to live alone because "I like'
l to be independent."
