Voters' Decision
Vanted on Taxes,
Says Legislator
Salem - (UPB - Oregon Sen
ate President Walter Peanon
(D-Portland) Saturday sug
gested to the Interim Com
mittee on Taxation that it
work out several different tax
problems and submit them to
the vote of the people lor a
choice at the first possible
date after the legislature con
venes in 1961.
He further suggested that
then the 'Legislature adjourn
until after a special election
so that 1961 legislators "will
know what kind of tax pro
gram the people will accept."
Pearson said the November
general election was a man
date to the legislature in that
the people "voted down every
measure that would have cost
them money. They also elect
ed a governor, Hatfield, who
campaigned on a platform of
keeping expenses down."
In his 4-page report to the
'committee, which Pearson
said he ,felt was the thinking
of the majority of the state
senate, he said the personal
property tax is not based on
the ability to pay, is the most
regressive of taxes and is
"most unfair, of. any tax
known today. It is Oregon's
oldest form of . taxation."
Gasoline Jobbers
, Change Their Name
The Oregon Independent
Brand Gasoline Jobbers and
Distributers, formed a year
and a half ago with the help
of Victor Milnes, Medford, is
changing its name to the Ore
gon Oil Jobbers association.
The Oil Daily, a petroleum
. Industry publication, said the
change of name is necessary
to come into conformity with
membership requirements of
the national organization.
Milnes, the magazine said,
spearheaded the drive" to form
the association a year and a
half ago when morale among
Oregon service station men
was low due to continuing
price wars in the state. The
association was formed to im
prove communications among
the marketers, and coordinate
industry operations in Ore
gon. .
Milnes was elected presi
dent" of. the association last
January and has since been
selected chairman of the new
-Pacific Oil Conference when
it met in San Francisco last
month.
He got his start in Medford
" as a heating oil salesman, the
magazine said, and rose to
president of Fortune Stations,
' Inc. Last May he consolidated
his company with Regal Sta
tions company and is now vice
president and general man
ager of the firm.
