trapped in an elevator, which

- told them he was trapped be

floors in the elevator,: but
smother, tenant removed the

Policeman's Killer
Sentenced to Death
Redwood City, Calif.-IUPD-
Alexander Robillard, con
fessed killer of a Hillsbor
ough, Calif., patrolman, was
condemned to death in the gas
chamber by a jury Saturday
night.
The jury of nine men and
three women, deliberating
only on whether the 19-year-old
slayer should die or re
ceive - a life sentence, an
nounced its verdict after a
day and a half of delibera
tion. The jury was locked up
last night after getting the
case at noon, telling Judge B.
Blum at the time that it was
split 9-3 but without saying
what verdict it favored.
Robillard pleaded guilty to
shooting patrolman Gene
Doran to death when the offi
cer stopped him for question
ing on a lonely road early
the morning of Aug. 5.

delinquency. The lecture was
made, in connection with
study of youth and crime be
ing carried out by the Ameri
can Problems classes under
the instruction of Bob Myrick
Kilpack touched on the top
ics of security institutions,
cause . of delinquency, penal
systems, and treatment of de
linquent behavior. He empha
sized the responsibility of
students, parents, and commu
nity in relation to juvenile de
linquency.

GEORGE H. VEIDT
The body of George Henry
Veidt, 69, of Anoka, Minn.,
who died in a local hospital
Thursday, was transferred
Friday by Perl Funeral home
to Anoka, Minn, for services
and interment.
" Mr. Veidt was born in Min
nestota July 7, 1890, and was
a resident of this area for one
month. He was a monument
dealer by profession. Survi
vors include his wife, Mrs,
Lillian Veidt, and one daugh
ter, Mrs. Paul Evensen, Med
ford, and two grandchildren.

ed the 14th annual high school
forensic tournament at Pa
cific university, Forest Grove,
Dec. 4 and 5.
The team debated both the
affirmative and negative to
the question, Resolved: that
section 14b of the Taft-Hart
ley law should be repealed,
but did not enter the individ
ual events. After defeating
two teams from the Portland
area, Central Catholic High
school, and one from Hills-
boro, Phoenix was kept from
the finals by a loss to Jesuit
High school of Portland.
The tournament was the
first debating skirmish for
the Phoenix team this year
and the first time that Phoe
nix has participated in the in
vitational meet at Pacific uni
versity. '
. The Talent High school fac
ulty were guests Friday eve
ning of the Phoenix faculty
at , a - get-acquainted party in
the Phoenix High school an
nex.
E. M. Skipworth, high
school, principal, emceed the
evening's program, assisted
by Miss Catherine Carter, par
ty cnairman.
Highlights of the entertain
ment were a vocal number by
Jack.Dube, Harry Kannasto,
and Mel Skipworth; a calf
judging contest; and a wom
en's balloon relay race. Danc
ing rounded out the evening's
program.
Those receiving prizes were
Reno Offutt, for the most
original hat; Don Mitchell.
door prize, and Mrs. Roy Parr.
for the largest number of col
lected tickets. Mrs. Donna
James and Mrs. Reno Offutt
presided at the snack table.
District Pays Debt
For Crane Reservoir
Redmond (UPD - The Cen
tral Oregon Irrigiation district
has paid off its debt for re
construction of Crane Prairies
reservoir in Oregon.
The district presented the
United States with a check for
$7243. The payment was com
pleted ahead of schedule.
About 52,000 had been due
next July.

teachers were guest speakers
at a recent meeting sponsored
by the math department of
Southern Oregon college. Mil
dred James, Phoenix, reported
on the National Science Foun
dation Math Institute held at
Reed college last summer; Del
Hackert, Medford, on the in
stitute held at Oregon State
college,' Corvallis; - and Var
ney Corey, Ashland, on the
one held at Drake university.
Junior and senior high
math teachers of Jackson- and
Josephine counties attended
the meeting.
Dr. Floyd Taylor, of the
SOC faculty, reported on cur
rent publications concerning
the teaching of mathematics
and announced the forthcom
ing visitation of Dr. Steven
A. Jennings to the campus.
Dr. Taylor extended an invi
tation to the math teachers
of the two counties, along
with two or three of their
math students to hear the
speaker Jan. 27 at 7:30 pjn.

to produce the world's best
edible peanuts, exported 25,
000 tons of them in 1958.

Edgar A. Kerston, 52, who
came from Minnesota to Med
ford about six years ago, died
Friday at his home, 135 Van
couver ave. Funeral arrange
ments will be announced by
Chapel Mortuary.
JOHN L.. DAVIDSON
Col. John L. Davidson, 63,
Brownsboro, died at Madigan
Army hospital in Tacoma,
Wash., Thursday.
He was bom in Lew Beach,
N.Y., July 11, 1896, and was
a graduate of the United
States Military academy, West
Point. Other schools which he
attended while in the service
include infantry school, air
service pilots school, air ob
servation school, chemical
warfare, field officers course,
Air Force engineers school,
and the Air Force tactical
school. . -
He is survived by his wid
ow, Mrs. Elizabeth Davidson;
two daughters, Cheryl D. Tal
bot, Milford, Del., and Jean D.
Gordon, Hockessin, Del.; eight
grandchildren; one brother,
Mahlon H. Davidson, Living
ston Manor, N.Y.'

Ashland - Charles Earl
Home, 73, of 492 Addison St.,
Ashland, died Ttec. 10 at his
residence following a long
illness. He was born Dec. 25,
1885, at Morning Sun, Iowa.
Mr. Home married Bessie
R. Harris, Jan. 16, 1907, in
Keokuk, Iowa, and moved to
Ashland in 1921. He was a
retired carman for the South
ern Pacific company.
Survivors include his wife,
two sons, Paul Home, Klam
ath Falls; Dr. Dean Home, Se
attle, Wasli. one daughter,
Mrs. Helen Bess Evans, Eu
gene, 10 grandchildren, one
great grandchild and one sis
ter, Mrs. Frank Frazer, Wa
pello, Iowa.
Funeral services 1 will be
held Monday, Dec. 14, at 1:30
p.m. at Litwiller's Mountain
View chapel with the Rev. R.
L. Cornwall officiating. Inter

Steelworkers' Boss
Raps Latest Offer

Steelworkefs ' President
David J. McDonald, labeling
management's latest' offer "a
fake and a fraud," Saturday
predicted the steelworkers
would overwhelmingly re
ject it when a secret vote was
held.
McDonald, speaking to
nearly 1,000 leaders of the
28th district here, charged the
steel industry with destroy
ing the good relations with
the union.
He predicated that the in
dustry would "never turn the
United Steelworkers of Amer
ica into a company ' union,"
adding that management was
trying to turn back the clock
20 years.
"I have challenged' them
(management) ' before," he
said. "I Will challenge them
again to come out of their
ivory towers and get a new
contract for- the eteelwork-ers."
