plained they were virtually
forced to do business with
Kansas City again.
General Manager George
Weiss said he trie dto make
deals with two National
league clubs-and will keep on
trying "but . we iust .can't
seem to. get together."
Delighted
The Yankees, delighted in
obtaining Maris,, although he
batted only .273 last season,
said they had no apology to
make over the fact they had
to deal with the A's again.
Casey Stengel, who okayed
the deal, said at his Glendale,
Calif., home that he planned
to make Maris his regular
left-fielder .despite the fact
Roger played right field ex
clusively for Kansas City last
season.
' "Now It looks like we have
a complete outfield," Stengel
said. "We'll try to go with
Maria in left, Mickey Mantle
in crenter, and Hector Lopez
in right. I know we gave up
a lot but we feel it' was worth
it to get the man we wanted."
That man, of course, was
Maris, on whom the Yankees
have had their eye for the
past two years since he broke
in with Cleveland in 1957.
Maris hit only .235 in 1957
and .240 in 1958 but has
shown evidence of tremen
dous Mantle-like power.
