Margaret J. - We should
tell Elaine before it's too late.
Charles J. - She wouldn't
even believe us now.
Margaret J. - A widowed
friend of mine is about to
marry a man to whom I intro
duced her some time ago, and
I am greatly worried about
the future of this relationship.
The man is in his 50s and
has never been married. He
is highly successful in' busi
ness. My husband and I
thought a great deal of Henry
and we did what we could to
encourage the relationship
with Elaine.
Since that time we have
learned some shocking things
about him. Another friend in
formed us that Henry lived
the life of sexual deviate for
many years. We learned that
he had an affair with a wom
an and put her through tor
ture. I feel we should tell
Elaine now before it is too
late, but my husband dis
agrees. e
Charles J. I feel that it is
already too late for us to med
dle. Elaine is head over heels
in love with Henry and has
made all her plans for the
wedding and their married
life.
I agree that Elaine is too
nice to be put through the
mill in a marriage of this sort,
but I am afraid of what this
thing might do to her at this
stage. She has been seeing
Henry steadily for the past
year and she keeps telling us
that he is the finest, most
wonderful man she ever met.
I must admit that so far he
has treated her royally and
she has taken on a new bloom.
The way things are now I
doubt whether Elaine would
even believe us if we told her
the whole story.
The Council: This is a most
uncomfortable business for
the J's, but we think Charles
is right in wanting to keep
quiet at this stage.
In the first place, if the J's
told Elaine what they had
heard they would be repeat
ing malicious gossip. It could
be true, but that doesn't re
move the taint from a piece
of information passed on to
harm another's reputation.
Secondly, the J's should be
aware that a widow in her
50's is probably competent to
make some adjustments of her
own. The fact that she has
known the man well for a
year before making a decision
indicates she is not a desper
ate or foolhardy person.
Henry has made a good im
pression on the J's and on
Elaine over an extended per
iod. That says something in
his favor.
Finally, from the scrap of
information given them the
J's are not competent to judge
the overall situation. It is pos
sible that Henry has made or
is making a strenuous effort
to break with his old life. He
may have been under medical
treatment for his emotional
problems and now be ready
to start a new life with an
understanding woman.
The J's should not assume
that Elaine is completely in
the dark about such matters.
It seems more likely that a
mature man and woman con
templating marriage would
have discussed various inti
mate issues. Elaine and her
fiance may be prepared to
face whatever problems
they'll encounter.
In any case, the J's should
not consider themselves re
sponsible for the marriage
simply because they introduc
