Ike's Visit To
Vatican Criticized
Tacoma - (I'PB The Rev.
Clyde J. Kennedy, president
of the American Council of
Christian Churches and pastor
of a Tacoma church has is
sued a statement criticizing
President Eisenhower's visit
to the Vatican Sunday.
The council represents
about 1,500,000 Protestants in
15 denominations.
"It is a serious blow to our
American tradition of separ
ation of church and state for
the President to visit the
Pope," Kennedy said. "The
Roman Catholic fosters a
church - state concept which
we in America have rejected.
For the President to lend the
prestige of his office to such
an occasion and to receive
honors from the Pope is un
worthy of a long-established
position."

Kitchen Appliances
Going Into Other
Rooms in Residences
The reasons for this popu
larity are not difficult to un
derstand. Chefs-both family
and professional varieties -like
the speed with which gas
responds to the slightest turn
of the control knob. They
have absolute command of
the burner and they can see
immediately just how high or
how. low the flame is set.
Time, Fuel Savings
They don't have to wait for
the burner to heat up before
starting to cook, nor does the
burner stay hot for minutes
after they have finished.
These represent savings not
only of time, but of fuel, too.
Modern automation is not
limited to cooking equipment,
however. The same quick re
sponse that makes gas the
preferred- cooking fuel also
gives - clothes . dryers, water
heaters, incinerators, refrig
erators and other appliances
an extra measure of control
and safety.
The combination washer
dryer is a good example of
the efficiency and versatility
of modern gas appliances.
Many models use gas not only
to provide gentle heat for
the drying cycle, but a small
heating device raises the tem
perature of the wash and
rinse water to the most effi
cient level. A cleaner, fresh
er wash is the result.
The new smokeless-odorless
gas incinerators, which are
becoming more pupular every
day, also come in a wide vari
ety of shapes and colors.
If you have ever had the
misfortune of having food
spoil during an electrical
power failure, you'll have a
special appreciation for the
new gas refrigerators now
available. Snow, sleet, wind
and rain will not interrupt
their dependable service.
Silent Operation
The 1960 refrigerators fea
ture automatic ice dispensers,
self-defrosting, separate freez
er compartments and all the
other popular innovations, as
well as economical, totally
silent operation.
Gas home heating equip
ment, too, is getting the mod
ern design treatment. Com
pact, smartly- styled units -central
systems and ' direct
room heaters alike now are
frequently- located in the -kitchen
or recreation room of
new houses. Their compact
ness and colorful steel covers
enable them to blend neatly
with the other up-to-date
home appliances. .
Phenomenal Growth .
Today, three" out of four
families rely on gas service
in their homes. The phenom
enal growth of the gas indus
try since the end of World
War II has been mostly hid
den from public view in the
underground trans mission
lines that now extend to every
corner of the U.S.
It took the development of
high - tensile strength, thin
wall large diameter steel
pipes to make long - distance
gas transmission practical.
More and more kitchen ap
pliances are ending up else
where than in the kitchen.
There's no mystery as to
where they're going they're
being installed in dens, play
rooms and family rooms.
Sometimes it's the brand
new appliance which ends up
here. More often, the new
unit goes in the regular kit
chen and the old" one goes
into the family room. Either
way, thousands of appliances
which arrive as a family gift
this Christmas are going to
make possible the beginnings
of a second kitchen in the
family room.
Catching On Rapidly
All this is happening be
cause the concept of a second
living room, playroom,, family
room or whatever you may
want to call it is catching on
rapidly.
Time was, of course, when
the family rooni was a spar
tan affair with sparse furnish-
Northeast Storm
Leaves 12 Dead
By United Press International
A violent storm subsided in
to snow flurries in the North
east Tuesday and a general
warm-up spread through chill
ed Dixie.
The storm left at least 12
persons dead, the East Coast
clogged with snow and the
South shivering in sub-freezing
temperatures.
Gale -force winds powered
the near-blizzard out of the
Appalachians Monday
through Pennsylvania "and

Southern officials blamed
the storm for seven deaths by

ings. But today many families
are showing considerable orig
inality in designing and fur
nishing these rooms. In situa
tion like this, a "second kit
chen" is a natural.
If new appliances are pur
chased specifically for this
extra kitchen, the chances are
good that they're scaled down
slightly from those in the reg
ular kitchen. On the market
right now are a number of
small refrigerators which fur
nish "spot" refrigeration and
which are ideal for storing
the food and beverages likely
to be needed when the ang
gathers for a party. Likewise,
small ranges and compact
sinks are ideal for such rooms.
More Familie Doing It
But more and more families
are furnishing their second
Lkitchens with the used appli
ances which become available
when new models are pur
chased for the big kitchen.
That's particularly so nowa-
