IKE VISITS POPE President Eisenhower

Pope Calls on God to Assist
Eisenhower in Peace Efforts
Vatican City-fllPD-Pope John
XXIII greeted President Ei
senhower with a smile and a
handshake here Sunday and
called on God to help his
"noble efforts" to promote
world peace.
The, whirlwind Eisenhower
visit to the Vatican the first
paid by an incumbent presi
dent in 40 years broke num
erous precedents. Although it
was nominally a private call,
it got most of the trimmings
usually reserved for formal
"state visits."
For the first time that any
one could remember, Domen-
ico Cardinal Tardini, Vatican
secretary of state, was present
at Eisenhower's meeting with
the Pope instead of awaiting
a formal call from the Presi
dent later.
Pop Speaks in English
The President was accom
panied by his interpreter, Lt.
Col. Vernon Walters, but his
services were not needed. The
Pope spoke English, doing so
on an official occasion for
the second time in his reign.
The Pope welcomed the
President with, a brief address
in Italian. They spoke togeth
er in English in the papal
library, and then the Pope
read a brief farewell message
in English.
"We earnestly invoke the
power assistance of God . . .
in your noble efforts as the the American, people
untiring servent of your peo
ple and the cause of peace in
the world," the Pontiff said
in his welcoming address. .
In his farewell remarks,
Pope John said:

"We beg your excellency to
discern in these words of ours
an expression of the senti
ments of benevolence and ad
miration which we cherish for

Pope John set another
precedent by addressing about
