Park and Shop Lol
Use Still Grows
. The use of downtown Park
and Shop lots continues to
grow as more residents be
come familiar with, the loca
tion and availability of off-
street parking space, accord
ing to Don McNeil, Jackson
County Chamber of Com
merce manager.
As of Dec. 1, downtown
merchants and business firms
have paid for, through vali
dated tickets, more than 16,-
000 shopping hours for cus
tomer parking on downtown
Park and Shop lots, McNeil
said.
The plan started Aug. 17,
when four lots were put into
operation with about 34 mer
chants participating. Now
there are seven downtown, lots
with 74 firms participating.
Twenty-five Park and Shop
directional signs are currently
being installed, McNeil said,
which will serve to lead those
who are unfamiliar with lot
locations to the off-street fa
cilities. The signs are prominently
displayed in the downtown
thoroughfares and make use
of the standard Park and
Shop emblem with directional
arrows. The cost of the direc
tional signs and all Park and
Shop promotion material is
paid for through subscriptions
of Park and Shop members,
McNeil rioted. ,
COLLEGE FOUNDER DIES
Jersey City, N. J. (UPD - Dr.
Charles Leonard Brown, one
of the founders and dean of
Seton Hall Medical college,
died of uremia Friday. He was
60.

A guidance session covering
preparation for college or
other training beyond the
high school level will be held
for the students of Medford
High school Dec. 9 at 9 a.m.
Principal Lester D. Harris
announced that a visiting
team from the state system of
higher education has been in
vited to conduct the meeting.
The state system team will
include the executive secre
tary of the High School-College
Relations committee of
the state board of higher edu
cation, Francis B. Nickerson;
representatives from each
state institution of higher edu
cation; and a representative
from Oregon Technical Insti
tute. The importance of educa
tion beyond high school and
the urgency of adequate prep
aration early in the high
school years will be ex
plained. A description of what
"adequate preparation" en
tails, career opportunities,
costs, scholarships, and me
chanics 'of school application
and entrance will be stressed.
Representatives from each
of the state schools will ex
plain their respective academ
ic offerings and point up each
institution's specific require
ments. Opportunity for ques
tions by students is given to
provide individual guidance.
The informative sessions are
conducted annually in the
high school as part of the reg
ular guidance program. They
represent a combined effort
by the state system of higher
education and the high school
to beter prepare high school
students for future careers.
The program presents com
plete information on the edu
cational opportunities provid
ed at public expense within
the state. ,

Building Permits
Increase in City '
A total of 215 building per
mits valued at $547,711 was
issued last month by the city
building department, a large
increase over the number and
valuation of permits issued in
November last year.
In November, 1958, only 80
permits, valued at $349,750,
were issued, and in the same
month of 1957, only 53 per
mits, valued at $331,212, were
issued. ,
Plumbing permits, 110, ac
counted for the majority of
last month's permits, but there
were 22 new home construc
tion permits with a total val
uation of $303,300 and three
new business construction per
mits valued at $160,500.

at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 8.
The evening meeting is being
held to make it possible for
parents and other interested
adults to ask questions con
cerning college entrance re
quirements and obtain perti
nent information.
It is hoped that a large
number of parents will be
able to take advantage of the
meeting where college repre
sentatives are brought to the
school to give advice on the
kind of preparation they rec
ommend for college - bound
students.
Suit To Be Filed
To Recover Money
The City of Medford is fil
ing a complaint in district
court against Louis Kowolski
in hopes of recovering S95 the
city administration feels he
owes the city.
Kowolski is the contractor
building the Army reserve
armory on West Jackson st.,
across from Jackson park.
City Attorney Joel Reeder
said Kowolski came to the
city building department last
April with the plans and spe
cifications for the armory to
obtain a city building permit.
The city did approximately
$95 worth of work on the
plans before Kowolski re;
alized , he was building the
armory on U. S. government
property and would not need
to comply with city building
regulations or obtain a city
building permit, Reeder said.
Since that time, Kowolski tempts to recover the money,
has ignored the city's ai-1 according to Reeder.
