Boy, 15, Confesses
To Slaying of Girl
Kentfield, Calif. - (UPD - A
13-year-old boy was charged
with murder Wednesday night
for . the sex slaying of Lorna
ijax, a lonely, 12-year-old
girl who was found hanged
and stabbed in a secret hide
away less than one block from
her home.
, Clifford Fortner, a tall,
gangly, pimple -faced youth,
was scheduled to be arraigned
today before Superior Judge
Benson To Undergo
Surgery Friday
Washington (UPD Secre
tary of Agriculture Ezra T.
Benson will undergo surgery
for removal of his gall blad
der, Walter Reed Army Med
ical Center announced today.
A spokesman said Benson
entered the hospital Wednes
day night, and that the oper
ation will be performed Fri
day. . The surgery was decided
upon, a hospital official said,
because Benson has been suf
fering a period of "intermit
tent acute attacks of gall
bladder cholic."
. Benson is- expected fo be
hospitalized for the next .10
days or two weeks.

said Fortner told investigators
Wednesday he killed. the han
dicapped youngster after hav
ing sexual intercourse with
her shortly after midnight on
Sunday, Nov. 15.
The body was found late
the following,, day by Clif
ford's 13 - year-old - brother,
Norman.
"Something came over me
I don't know what-after the
sex act," Clifford told Assist
ant District Attorney Bruce
Bales. ;
The youth said he struck
the girl on the head several
times with a flashlight, and
then attempted to hang her
when he saw she was still
alive. Finally he stabbed her
in the abdomen with -a steak
knife-part of a set Lorna had
bought to give her parents at
Christmas'.
Slight Speech Defect
The girl was handicapped
by a cleft palate that opera
tions had not entirely cor
rected and was teased by oth
er youngsters because of a
slight speech defect.
Her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
John S. Lax, said this was a
factor m her personality prob
lems, such as hiding out in
her various "forts."

Disputes President

Sanger, former international
president of the Planned Par
enthood Federation, Wednes
day disputed President Eisen
hower's statement that birth
control is none of the govern
ment's business.
"It is just as much a gov
ernmental problem as any
thing such as polio or any dis
ease that affects all of the
people," Miss Sanger said. "It
comes under -the same cate
gory as other state and county
health operations."
Miss Sanger, founder of
seven organization? favoring
birth control, said she thinks
the U.S. should help any over
populated nation that asks for
aid.
Witnesses Questioned
In fP&L Rate Hearing
Salem (UPD Attorneys for
Pacific Power and Light Com
pany began cross-examination
Wednesday of witnesses for
the the Public "Utility Com
mission in PP&L's rate hike
case now before the PUC.
PUC consultant David A.
Kosh, Washington, D.C., was
on the stand most of the day.
The utility seeks a 14.5 per
cent increase-in rates.
