food additives and chemicals
which leave crop residues.
Another opinion advanced
is that at the same time, it is
the responsibility, of officials
and others concerned to give
the public the full facts from
which to make an intelligent
evaluation to avoid "such
mass hysteria as followed fed
eral word that some cranber
ries were contaminated with
aminotriazole."

Patterson, chief chemist for
the Oregon Department, said
the agency is nearing the end
of its first round of lab work
on cranberries sampled from
all wholesale channels in the
state. No contaminated ber
ries have been found so far,
he said.

Approves 19 New
School Districts

in the direction of consolida
tion, the State Board of Edu
cation gave its blessing Wed
nesday afternoon to the for
mation of 19 proposed admin
istrative school districts in
three counties.
The new districts, subject
to approval of the voters, in
clude eight in Umatilla coun
ty, three in Clatsop county
and eight in Douglas county.
Part of Program
The proposed consolidations
are part of the Oregon school
district reorganization pro
gram ordered by the 1957
Legislature. Nineteen of these
new district proposals have
been rejected at the polls.
When the new law went in
to effect,' Oregon had 708
school districts. Now there
are 607 in the state.
Secretary Quits
Mrs. Joy Hills Gubser step
ped down as secretary of the
board. She has served in that
post since December, 1952,
Her replacement, effective
Jan. 1, is James Turnbull, de
puty superintendent of sduca
tion.
Mrs. Gubser continues as
an assistant superintendent of
the board.

minutes of hemming and haw
ing, Brinkley finally told

Portland -(UPD- Oregon's
Army and Air National Guard
units performed smoothly in
a four-hour practice alert call
ed from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Wednesday.
All air and ground units re
ported and a total of 86 per
cent of the guard's 7,100-man
force turned out.
About 50 per cent of
guardsmen scattered in 81
units around the state had re
ported for duty an hour after
the alert was sounded by Ore
gon Adjutant General Alfred
Hintz.
At the end of the second
hour. 68 per cent of the men
had reDorted either to their
own bases or at the nearest
guard installation.
Once a Year
The National Guard makes
it a practice to stage, mock
alerts at least once a year to
test the readiness of both air
and eround units hi 39 Ore
gon towns and cities.
No movement of troops or
planes was involved 4n the ex
ercise.
Originally it was planned
to send down target planes
from McChord Air Force base
in Washington, but bad wea
ther Drevented the flight.
Fighter and other-units at
Portland Air Force base were
readied for combat, but no
planes took off in the dense
fog that blanketed the field.

their men by radio, television,
phone and other means.
Guardsmen were required
to report in person to their
units or to the National Guard
unit nearest them in order to

A similar test was held in
December of 1958 when men
were called out at 4 a.m.
Portland Holdup
Suspect Seized
Portland -(UPD- Andy E.
Spencer, 45, was held under
$iu,uuo bail today charged
with the mid-day robbery
Wednesday of the Livestock
Kenton branch of the First
National Bank of Oregon.
Spencer was apprehended
less than an hour after the
bank was robbed of $1,598
following a chase by a bank
officer, and a mortician in
hearse.
The robber brandished
gun at Mrs. Gwendolyn Van
Antwerp, 44, Vancouver,
Wash., saying "give me all
your money or I will kill
you." The bandit then fled in
a car.

chase in Mikeworth's hearse
They lost track of the car but
police later picked up the
suspect.
Police said Spencer at first
denied knowledge of the hold
up but later confessed and
told officers where the money
